What you'll do

This five hour course (split into two 2hour sessions) can be taken by complete beginners or by students with some experience of clay who wish to improve their skills at the wheel or try out a new hand building project or two. The price is for one person but up to four people can share this experience. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated and learned, with participants having the opportunity to learn to ‘throw’ clay on the potters wheel and also experience hand building. I will demonstrate throwing on my potters wheel and participants will each have the chance to experience ‘throwing’ their own pots on my wheel also. We will prepare and weigh clay and I will demonstrate step by step process of throwing on the potters wheel, centering the clay on the wheel, opening out the pot and pulling up the walls to make a cylinder. I will then guide you step by step through the process of throwing on the wheel and each participant will have a chance to practice throwing different shapes. Students will also have the opportunity to learn hand building techniques and get creative by choosing pieces to hand build, such as ceramic spoons, soap dishes, pinch and slab pots and mugs.

Learn more about Clare

Clare

I am a self employed potter and owner of Clare Harvey Ceramics. I am spend all available hours whilst my children are at school (and many evenings) working from my home studio, experimenting with new designs and glazes and producing functional wheel thrown ceramics for sale at markets and in the North West UK. I learnt from a professional potter in Malaysia and am also largely self taught. I established Clare Harvey Ceramics since moving back to the UK with my family 3 years ago. I have an easy and natural relationship with my students, having taught kids classes in the local area and individual private classes from my studio. I can't wait to introduce you to working with clay, whether it's through hand building or on my potters wheel - I bet you'll enjoy it as much as I do!
