What you'll do

This is a renewed version adapted to provide a safe environment to conduct the experience. The class will take place in a house with a backyard that allows for plenty of social distancing and ventilation.
The experience is only offered for private groups up to 4 people.

We'll cook traditional Argentinian food: we'll make empanadas, taste our local beverage "mate", make dulce de leche pancakes, and drink Argentinian Malbec red wine together with the meal.

I'll welcome you with our famous herby hot beverage "mate" and alfajores, allowing for some time to get to know each other and talk about Argentinians’ traditions and culture. Then, I’ll teach you how to make the empanadas from scratch, both the dough and filling. While we wait for the dough and the filling cool down, we'll enjoy a typical picada (salami and cheese platter) and a chat with a local. Later on, we'll finish off making the empanadas and we'll prepare dulce de leche pancakes for dessert. Finally, we’ll sit at separate tables to enjoy the meal we’ve prepared, paired with Argentinian red wine, and good conversation.

I'll accompany you each and every step of the way, showing you the proper techniques and explaining a little bit of the history of the dishes and the different culinary traditions in the country. Be ready to get messy, since it’s a hands-on experience!

Hi, I'm Shir and I run this homegrown project which I call "Argentina Cooking".

I’m a passionate teacher and food enthusiast, I love both eating and cooking great food and I enjoy traveling, learning new things and meeting new people.

I think getting a grasp on traditional cuisine is a unique way to get to know the history and the culture of a place and its people. I want you to have an experience that is fun and where you can learn about argentines customs from a local's point of view.

My work experience is in the education field, I have a degree in Social Communication and I’m a professor. I’ve decided to combine my love for teaching and cooking by making my kitchen the classroom. I invite you into my home to share a delicious and typical Argentinian meal.

Where you'll be

In my in-laws' lovely home in the Caballito neighborhood, taking advantage of their bbq semi open area and backyard for social distancing and ventilation.
Caballito is a residential neighborhood in the geographic center of Buenos Aires city. You can find some of the classiest coffee houses in the city, restaurants with excellent cuisine and trendy bars. It contains Buenos Aires hidden gems, such as the English District and the Market of Progress.

Shirly's cooking class was great. We experienced the class with three other people but we still received thoughtful attention and consideration. It was great to try mate and alfajores and also making the empanadas from scratch was fun. We also had a great time learning about the city from Shirly, learning about Shirly herself, and also interacting with the other participants in the class. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a genuine experience learning how to make empanadas and learning about Argentinian culture.

My colleague and I attended the empanada cooking class on 25/01/2020 with Shirly, what a great experience! Shirly's English is perfect and she made a thoroughly welcoming host, covering all the amenities like water, wifi etc., plus fun extras like mate and alfajores tasting. As well as teaching us how to prepare the dough and empanada filling, she also explained the cultural significance of the food and the history, and her personal experiences growing up in Argentina. There were five people in the group which was an ideal number, we got to take turns doing some parts and each had responsibilities in others. The wine was delicious, the food even better, and the company made it a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Thank you Shir!

I enjoyed this Argentine cooking class with a colleague while working in BA. Shirly was an excellent host and teacher. During the class, we had the chance to learn about and try mate, sample the best alfajors, make empanadas and craft a delicious dessert. This experience is definitely one of the best things to do in Buenos Aires! Highly recommend!

We chose this class because it included making the dough and because reviews sounded like it is well done. It did not disappoint!!! It was fun, interactive, well-structured, instructional, and we all got the chance to practice each step. We even got help learning how to practice pancake-flipping skills! In addition, sitting around the table consuming the empanadas we made was an opportunity to have a conversation that covered all kinds of topics about Argentina! Shirly, thank you so much!

Would reccomend this experience! Very hands on and fun, and perfect for everyone who has tried empanadas on their trip and been curious to try making them. I also learnt some cooking tips and tricks in general that I’ll be taking home with me! Shirly was friendly and flexible even though I was a late due to traffic. I was very impressed! Keep up the good work!

I love taking cooking classes in the cities I travel to and this was one of the most fun I have ever done! Shirly was very accommodating with my food allergy and the experience was very hands-on. I’ve already made the empanadas I learned for my friends back home and they loved them! Would highly recommend!!
