What you'll do

For nature and history lovers looking to explore a more rural setting , I'll take you on a tour of some my favourite, lesser known spots around the village of Amami. Each place is rich in story and natural beauty. We will start from rural Amami Station and follow a route that will take us through rustic villages and along a short stretch of a 1500 year old pilgrimage trail. Passing by Amami Station, we'll make our way to Nagaretani-Hachiman Shrine and learn about the secret history of this small farming community. Next we will learn about an 800 year old battle and follow a short stretch of an ancient pilgrimage trail before visiting another slightly hidden shrine whose legend goes back some 2,000 years to the dawn of civilization in Japan. Finally, we will visit the traditional ryokan Nanten-en where we will enjoy a delicious Kaiseki lunch and soak away the aches of the day in their natural public hot springs.

Gary

I write for a number of Japan focused websites and assist several temples in the Kansai area with their English information as well as working front desk for a historic local ryokan. Having lived here for 5 years, my passion for Japanese history has taken me to many little known places within Kansai and I spend my free time exploring the back roads and temples of Kawachinagano. Over the years, I have learned many rare stories and Insta-friendly photo spots in my adopted hometown. From time to time, I also lead historical tours around some of Kansai's biggest landmarks, especially Koyasan.

Where you'll be

The route we will take runs parallel to the ancient Koya Kaido pilgrimage trail. We will then head up into the hills to a small community called Nagaretani and learn some of the history of what used to be a very wild and isolated part of Osaka. If time, we may also detour to Shimanotani, a picturesque village on the other side of the valley. We will then have a traditional Kaiseki lunch and use the hot springs at Amami Onsen Nanten-en.

More tips

Some of the walking route is a little steep so not recommend for people with mobility issues. We would aim to arrive at the ryokan in time for lunch to start at 12.30am at the latest.
