Animal experience hosted by Roy

60 mins
Includes drinks, equipment
Up to 2 people
Hosted in English, French

What you'll do

You will be met at the Roundhouse for teas & coffees, and a brief induction. We then move down to the ‘Meeting Shed’ where you will be introduced to your first full grown Highland Bullock. You will each be introduced to an animal each and be issued with a comb for grooming. At all times you will be monitored for safety, particularly where you feet are placed- (as being trodden on is the likeliest cause of injury).
You will take your time grooming and talking to the animal until he is ready to accept a hug from you. You will then lay your head on his back and spread your arms along his spine and around his neck. You will feel the glow from this massive body, warming and melting your heart, calming your mind, slowing your breathing. You will work at feeling this closeness and the acceptance that the animal is giving out, until it is time to release him back to the pasture.
You will then be introduced to the herd and select your personal animal. You will be shown how to approach them correctly, and then enabled to enjoy the maximum benefit of giving and receiving via a full-on personal ‘Highland hug’.
You will complete the Experience by washing your hands, and carrying away a round stone whose feel will always call to mind the whole-body acceptance by an individual from another species: one of the legendary Highland Cattle of Scotland.

20 years ago, when I started with Highand Cattle, there was no shelter on the farm: not for myself, nor the animals. In those early days, winter temperatures would drop to minus 10 to 20, and I used to observe how they coped, how they interacted. On really cold nights when I couldn’t sleep, I used to join the herd as we slowly paraded in the moonlight across the frost bound pastures with the vapour rising from our nostrils. I developed a special bond with the animals from that time, and learned how they reward the humans they trust.
This is how I learned about the ‘Highland Hug’. If a Highlander wants to demonstrate affection for another, they lay their heads over the back, pressing their chest against the other’s side: literally heart to heart.
My animals invite you to enjoy the same: you will feel your heart melt!
