What you'll do

We will start our exploration of Charleston's 300 year old African community at a house museum where one of the greatest African American artist of the 20th century created a lifetime of beauty. Led by the museum docents, we will witness the humble life of a great artisan. We will then walk through the neighborhoods, down the streets, and up the alleys in an exploration of the center of Charleston's 300 year old African Community. Finally, we will venture out past King Street to the spiritual center of the new beginning for the African American community as they built their new lives out of slavery. Charleston is the home of individualism, liberty, capitalism, women's rights, religious freedom, tyranny, oppression, racism, and slavery. We will walk through the streets of heaven and hell as we explore the life of Africans in America. Join us for an exploration, an awakening, and an empowerment trip through a time and events in Charleston's African American history. Learn our American history overwritten by time.

Larry

After decades in the financial industry and a stint in academia, 9 years ago, I became a licensed Charleston Tour Guide and 6 years ago an independent operator. I am your Ambassador to a greater understanding and a good time. Once a walking guide, a ghost tour guide, and for 2 years, one of the city's most requested Carriage Drivers, today, I am a writer, a storyteller, and a social activist on the lookout for the hidden messages, overlooked events, and heartfelt meaning of the world around us, dedicating myself to sharing stories of empowerment: The stories of the Free People of Color. The census of 1820 says of the 50,000 Africans living in Charleston, 9,820 were Free People of Color. Africans who had witted and gritted their way out of Slavery. Come here their story.
