What you'll do

The experience takes the whole day, (approx. 8am to 5pm). Me (or one of my friends), will give you a ride (from designated points in the South Zone) to get to the highest sector of the Tijuca National Park. There we'll visit Taunay Waterfall, charming, cute and highest waterfall in the park with 35m. We'll talk a bit about the geography and history of the Rio, the Tijuca Forest and Brazil and get prepared for the hike. Our hike takes about 4 to 5h total (9km=5.6mi/elevation gain 651m=2135ft). The first part, we hike about 1,5h going uphill until we reach Castelos da Taquara Peak, 814m (about 100m higher than Christ Redeemer) and located in a more secluded part of the park and it´s not a popular and known trail, so, usually, we do not see many people on the way. From this peak, in clear days, we have good views of the valley of the forest and the West side of Rio. On this peak, we have a break for lunch (remember to take sandwiches, fruits, cereal bar etc) and also 2liters of water. Then, we'll start hiking down and uphill going in a circuit of trails, crossing streams and a deeper part of the jungle until we reach ruins of an old coffee farm. From this point, we'll continue the hike to visit an amazing cave, knows as the Bat's Cave. From there we hike down to reach a waterfall where is possible to take a refreshing shower (bring a towel and bathing suit).

Learn more about Thiago

Thiago

After many years having hiking and trekking as a hobby, I decided to quit my office job and start a small business to take travelers who love nature to experience and enjoy hiking and walking in the mountains and the tropical rainforest of Rio. I’m a professional tour guide and together with my team (Alex, Felipe, and Aline), we show what we think is the best in hiking and nature in Rio. I grew up between the city of Rio and the countryside and childhood I was exploring and walking in the forests and mountains around. I've learned a lot about plants, animals and the ecosystem I live. I have traveled and hiked a lot in Latin America (Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico) and Rio still surprises me with this amazing and remarkable mix of jungle, mountains, beach, and city. And this is what I love to show my guests every day!
