What you'll do
This is an exciting workshop (not a culture walk). Hidden messages in London’s typography: The is the evocative story of London street signs and what they communicate to us, often on a subconscious level. Join author Sarah Hyndman for a joyous and activity-filled session in the Type Tasting studio exploring London’s letterforms and street signs as you uncover their hidden messages. This is a wonderful introduction that gives you insider-knowledge of London and is a fun way to discover why typography is so exciting. On arrival, you'll take part in fun experiments with fonts and pick a name badge. You'll be given a sketchbook to scribble in, and a selection of colour-in postcards will be handed out throughout the session. Sarah will show you how the street signs of London reveal amazing layers of history, and that informs your decision making — often on a subconscious level. From the pictograms and heraldic motifs of the Middle Ages, through to current day trends in typography. There will be snacks, smells, sounds and tasters to bring different topics to life, at the end you'll receive your own lighthearted 'font fortune'.
This is an exciting workshop (not a culture walk). I'm an author, a TEDx speaker and the founder of Type Tasting. I'm on a mission to make typography exciting for everybody by showing that it's a 'secret' code hidden in plain sight that we all know how to read. From shop signs and food packaging to book covers and movie posters, I show that typography is the magical language of our everyday lives. I've written three books including 'Why Fonts Matter' and a card game of snog/marry/avoid with fonts. I speak at events around the world, I'm a regular on radio and I sometimes pop up on television. I'm obsessed by London street signs and what they reveal about the history and culture of our wonderful city.
Sketchbook, colour-in information sheets, a fun 'font fortune', drinks, snacks, smells and tasters.
Where you'll be
The session takes place in the ephemera-filled Type Tasting studio. This is in an old Victorian chocolate factory overlooking a pretty cobbled courtyard, nestled on the edge of Dalston in London.
