We meet outside David Hughes Community Centre, in pretty Beaumaris to collect hired bikes/ check our bikes and receive a briefing about riding etiquette on the route. Our journey of 11.5 miles, begins with a few short hills, by skirting around the back of Beaumaris for an unusual view of Edward I’s fortress, to hear why it's the 'greatest castle never built'. We will continue on past Llanfaes Church, once one of the richest parishes in Wales, before riding towards Trwyn Du/ Penmon Point. We ride a stone's throw from the Menai Strait towards the ruins of Penmon Priory, which we explore before taking the private road towards Penmon Point and the lighthouse. After refreshments at the Pilot House Cafe (take away available), we return via a 'folly' built on the ruins of an early Norman castle, hidden in the woods, and accessed by a wooden walkway. We then either continue through the woods to return via Llangoed village. Along the way, there will be frequent breaks for stories, and viewing scenery and nature closer to hand.

I am passionate about cycling and Welsh history. A native Welsh speaker, with a degree in History and Welsh History, I love to share the fascinating tales behind Anglesey’s castles and historic sites. I am a British Cycling Ride Leader and volunteer to lead rides to encourage women's cycling.
I have cycled almost all the 1000 miles of road on the rural island of Anglesey, so I can lead you on a leisurely cycle ride along quiet country lanes and cycle tracks to discover the island’s hidden past.
I will ensure that you get a sense of achievement from completing a cycle ride while visiting places of interest.

Where you'll be

On this ride, we skirt around the back of Beaumaris for an unusual view of Edward I’s fortress, before passing through Llanfaes towards Penmon's ruined Priory and lighthouse. We'll stop at the Pilot House Cafe before returning. We go a short way on foot to visit another castle 'folly' atop older earthworks on our return. This is a fairly short ride at 11.5 miles- with a few small hills and plenty of opportunities to stop and see things!
