What you'll do

First, we'll need to decide what kind of boat you'll be taking, we have 4 singles, 2 doubles, 1 canoe & 1 paddleboard to choose from. Everyone will get a quick lesson on kayak safety, how to put on a personal flotation device properly, and how to paddle a kayak. Once we're all properly suited up. We will then get in the kayaks and head one-half mile upriver to Long Creek. Long Creek winds 1.5 to 2 miles inland before you can't go any further depending on the water level that day. We will kayak through the woods, under trees, near some mountain biking trails, past beavers, turtles, and great blue herons. Eventually, we will get out at on a log or sandbar to rest for a second, take some pictures, then head back down the creek to the river. If the creek was particularly low that day, and we couldn't get far up it, we can paddle back down to the island in the middle of the river and I'll show you the hidden creek that runs through the island. There are two bevers that live there & you can see where they've cut trees down to make their dam. Once we've had our fill of paddling around the river we'll head back. A round trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

Emilie & Matt

You don't have to be an expert to pick up a paddle and scoot around a lake. I guess that's why I started kayaking various rivers and lakes 10-15 years ago. When my wife and I lived on a lake in Michigan I was out on the water at least three times a week, and when we moved to Charlotte we HAD to live near water again. Kayaking the Catawba is probably one of my absolute favorite activities. It's a great form of exercise and a unique way to experience nature in ways not possible by land or larger boat. I've spent the last two years kayaking up and down the Catawba River, exploring the creeks that shoot off the main body, and paddling up into new areas when the water is at it's highest. For me, it wouldn't be a trip to Charlotte without finding new beaver dams, great blue heron nests, and even the occasional deer drinking from the creeks

Where you'll be

Most kayakers don't know about the entrance to Long Creek or are too unsure to travel up it. I will show you to the entrance, where to kayak to get up the creek, and how to get to the sandbar where you can tie up the kayak and sit in the cool water for a bit if you'd like. Nearly the experience will be hosted on Long Creek or the Catawba River.

Outdoor activities carry risks, and you may be exposed to dangerous situations as part of this experience. Make sure you can participate safely given your abilities and the conditions (such as location, weather, and equipment).
