What you'll do

Get out of your head and into the sand! Remember when you were a kid, playing with your favorite toys, lost in your own world, fully focused, oblivious to time and the outside world? “Flow” is what we call that now. Sand trays offer a powerful hands-on opportunity to recapture that sense of effortless freedom as you create a unique world in the sand. No experience necessary! You’ll be introduced to the shelves of miniatures, the sand trays, and the sand tray process. With your questions answered, you’ll select the miniatures that stand out for you. As you arrange them in the sand, a story unique to you in this time and space will emerge. I will sit off to the side, primarily as an observer holding the space as you work. At your request, I'm happy to take notes of what you say and what I observe. Often a record of your experience can be a surprise later since the work tends to be so deeply focused that you may not remember specific elements afterward. When you’re finished, we’ll talk about what the tray means to you. At that point, you might choose to make changes. I often call this process “dreaming out loud.” You get to change your story / dream in any way you want. You're welcome to take photos. Looking at photos later is like rereading a great book. You'll keep discovering new aspects that you didn't notice before.

I was introduced to sand trays over 30 years ago by an artist in Boulder. It was such a fascinating and deep experience that I later included it as a modality in my psychotherapy practice. Many years past my psychotherapy career, I continue to value the gifts and opportunities (as well as the fun!) in the sand tray process. I currently facilitate writing and collage groups for women through my business, Women Create!. I also facilitate a women’s writing group through the community college. I hold master’s degrees in Human Development, and in Psychology and Counseling.

More tips

The sand trays are 16 inches high. You can choose to sit on the rug, or on a low stool, whichever you prefer. This is an individual activity for one person. Nami the cat is the resident feline. Although he rules the world (just ask him), he is not allowed to disturb the sand tray work.
