What you'll do

Start your Colorado adventure by watching the sun rise over the iconic plateau of Mesa Verde National Park! (*Please note this tour is not physically inside Mesa Verde NP.)

Hawkins Nature Preserve is 122-acres of protected land with several miles of criss-crossing trails. Our walk is an easy 2 mile walk over sometimes uneven terrain. Afterwards, guests can come back to explore the area on their own! Dogs are welcome, but please ask before you bring Fido! As we walk through the preserve you will see & learn about the unique geology & ecology of southwest Colorado.

We will stop at the canyon's edge to watch the sunrise over the La Plata mountains & Mesa Verde NP. A sunrise hike isn't complete without a treat, so I will make sure to bring your choice of coffee, tea or hot chocolate & a locally baked goodie! After the sun rises we will continue our walk through pinyon-juniper woodlands, stopping along the path to learn about various flora & fauna. We will also stop at a 1,000+ year-old ruin and discuss the lives & culture of the people that built Mesa Verde.

Guests are encouraged to ask questions along the way. As a Cortez-local I know most of history/folklore of the area and am passionate about sharing this special place with others!

Although it's early, this is by far the best way to wake up in the Four Corners! If you need to move the date/time, just let me know!

During the school year I teach high school music in Shiprock, New Mexico on the Northern Navajo reservation. I live in Cortez with my two cats and enjoy hiking, mountain biking and paddle boarding all around the Four Corners!

Although I am not a certified expert in anything but teaching music, I have lots of friends who are archaeologists, biologists and the like. I love history, culture and science - so I've soaked up a lot of information about this area! As a young person I also spent my summers guiding bike & hike tours in southeast Alaska - so I'm experienced as a tour -guide & story-teller. I love meeting and getting to know new people and share my passion and knowledge for the place I live, work & play!

Where you'll be

Hawkins Nature Preserve is a 122-acre preserve on the southern edge of Cortez. Access is FREE & open to the public, but it can be difficult to find the perfect sunrise watching spot if you've never been. After our tour, it's easy to come back to explore the area by yourself. Hawkins is a popular dog-walking area, but please check in with me before your bring your friend! **This tour is NOT in Mesa Verde NP, but has greats views of the plateau.

Helen was a great orator and took the time to point out some really great spots along the hike. The coffee and snacks were delicious and extremely thoughtful! The tour was well paced and super informative.

Not a huge event, but definitely worth doing atleast once. She is very knowledgeable of the area and teaches you about local legends/lifestyle of the Navajo.

The Sunrise Tour with Helen was a perfect introduction to our Cortez/Mesa Verde do you just did something no I'm just texting/Canyon of the Ancients experience! Helen took us on a lovely early morning easy hike to see the sunrise, with knowledgeable discussions of the history and geography of the park and area. She provided us with delicious coffee and treats, and gave us excellent recommendations for hikes, restaurants and coffee.

A pleasant walk and great view of the sunrise over Mesa Verda. Helen shared her experience as a teacher among the Navajo and some Local folklore that made the walk pass by quickly.

This was a wonderful way to start off our day. It was nice and cool in the morning as Helen guided us to the sunrise spot. The walk was very easy (though the rocky terrain was a bit tricky at some points) and Helen's info was both informational and interesting. The treats were amazing.
