What you'll do

We'll head down to the chicken coop (Fowlty Towers, a joke for those of you who remember the British comedy series Fawlty Towers). We'll have a hands-on lesson on all things fowlty: chicken care and feeding, breeding, rearing of chicks, egg-gathering and cleaning, and if you want, I will explain how chickens get from the farm-yard to your plate (but fear not, we shan't actually kill any). When we're done, you'll understand the difference between a rooster and a hen, and know a bit about raising healthy, compassionately farmed food versus factory-farmed meat. You'll get a chance to pet and hold a gentle hen, hold baby chicks (if we have any at the time), and toss scratch for the chickens (which will make you immediately popular). This experience is especially great for children, to see where eggs come from and gather some from the coop to keep for their breakfast. I modify the experience according to what guests want to know, how much detail they are interested in. For children it is a gentle experience, I leave out the discussion on butchering, depending on their age. Kids must be at least 3 years old to participate. I have only gentle birds and am careful to ensure kids have no fearful experiences (e.g. birds flapping around).

Lorna

An experienced chicken farmer with 12+ years of hands-on experience. Everything from setting broody hens on eggs with baby chicks hatching 21 days later, to dealing with gorgeous roosters, to the everyday care and feeling of a flock of heritage birds. We keep our chickens both as entertaining pets and as serious food (for eggs and meat). I blend a balance of sensible farming values with a deep love of animals and care for their well-being... my chickens lead pampered lives. I learned my chicken-farming skills from kind neighbors in our rural community who passed down decades of personal experience. I maintain a tradition of rearing healthy organic meat and producing the most delicious farm-fresh eggs you will ever taste. I also consult farming reference books, there's a lot to it... and now I advise my neighbors on how to get started

More tips

Wear sensible closed-toe shoes e.g. runners, boots are better, and be prepared to get your footwear a bit dirty. Long sleeves a good idea if you wish to hold a chicken. No cell phones in your hands, put them in a pocket, you do not want to drop your phone in the chicken-yard, trust me on this.
