What you'll do

I will meet guests at central location and drive them onto the blue ridge Parkway to the Sleepy Gap Overlook. Here guests will be given an overview and orientation about the nature of Forest Bathing and what the experience will entail. Guests will share what they would like to receive from the experience. Once the group has shared and we all are satisfied we will embark onto the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) We will walk a total of 3.4 miles round trip with a break in the middle on top of ridge near a beautiful stand of trees to engage in seated forest bathing meditation. Meditation instruction will be offered and portable meditation cushions provided. After a 30 minute session we will continue in walking meditation to the Walnut Cove Overlook where Guests will have a chance to see a large vista from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here we will share further about our experience of silent walking and what we are experiencing and what guests would like to more deeply experience on the walk back to Sleepy Gap. We will then return to the trail and walk back south.

I am a Zen Monk and an avid hiker and backpacker with a love of bringing together the experience of meditation in a natural surrounding. I've been practicing Zen for 18 years and have been hiking since I was a teenager. I have lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains for the last 20 years and find the area to be the perfect place to practice Shinrin-Yoku translated into English the terms means Forest Bathing. It was a practice developed by physicians in Japan in the 1980's to use the peace of Cedar Forests to lower blood pressure and reduce stress of business people working in the crowded city of Tokyo. The results were and continue to be remarkable. The practice has taken root in the US in the past couple of decades . I'm in a unique position to lead small groups on forest bathing excursions in the Blue Ridge mountains.

Where you'll be

The Mountains to Sea Trail runs 1100 miles from the Mountains on NC where we are to the ocean of the Outer banks. We will traverse two mountain vista - Sleepy Gap and Walnut Cove along the trail that is nestled within the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Guest requirements

Up to 8 guests aged 18 and up can attend.

Government ID

You’ll need to take a picture of yourself that matches the photo on your ID. This is so Airbnb can confirm who’s actually going on the experience. You’ll only have to do this once.

More tips

Please bring sturdy shoes and water. Don't think of this as a hike just for exercise. It is a walking meditation. Be prepared for silence and to get to know the forest and yourself in a new way.
