What you'll do

Whether you are an experienced weaver or never worked with fiber in your life, you will be dancing on the loom in no time! All you need is artistic curiosity and a desire to participate in an historic New Mexico weaving tradition. We begin with a brief introduction to the role that weaving has played in New Mexico's history and an orientation to the loom. Next, you’ll pick your colors. A rainbow of yarn is always available for a change of mood or style. We’ll discuss design options, various techniques and what you would like to learn during our time together. Then it’s time to jump on the loom and begin weaving. You will learn the basic technique of weaving stripes and other design elements incorporated in traditional blankets and color blending. I have worked with all levels of ability and can adapt the experience to different skill levels . No weaving or fiber experience is necessary, only a yearning for creative adventure. At the end, you will walk away with a wonderful woven creation crafted in a time-honored New Mexican tradition.

Note: A walking loom requires the ability to stand for periods of time.

I am an award-winning weaver, trained in the Rio Grande tradition unique to the Southwest, with 20 years of experience. This style of weaving and loom was brought to New Mexico by Spanish settlers in the 16th century and resulted in the melding of the Spanish, Mexican native and local Indian pueblo weaving cultures. I work on a traditional floor loom and have taught weaving for 10 years. I also own and lead Loom Dancer Odysseys, a textile tour company offering fiber enthusiasts worldwide fiber art workshops with local masters. Our tours aid in sustaining global textile populations by funneling money and support back into the indigenous communities through the workshops and our interaction. It is a joy to share my passion for fiber arts, culture and local history with all levels of ability. No experience necessary, just artistic curiosity

I spent most of a day with Cari at her beautiful weaving studio working on my very first weaving project, and I loved every minute of it. Cari made me feel welcome and took time to get to know me and my goals for the day. We began the weaving process by selecting yarn from her extensive and colourful stash, which was gathered on her many weaving trips at home and abroad. Throughout the day I felt supported and guided by Cari as we made decisions about designs. Cari shared stories about her weaving trips and her teaching, and they were delightful to hear. She was a wealth of knowledge on various types of weaving, where to purchase materials, and the various types of looms. We spent most of our time together on one of her Santa Fe looms, and Cari helped me to feel very successful with my project. By the end of our time together I had completed a piece that I am very proud of, and I was delighted to get to know Cari. I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed this experience. Cari is wonderful!

This is an extraordinary experience. Cari is an experienced teacher who provides as much or as little guidance as you want. Don't worry if you are a novice like me; she will get you weaving in no time. Cari also is a phenomenal weaver who brings tons of creativity to her work, so she presented me with artistic options when I was stuck on what color or pattern to choose next. Most important, Cari is fascinating to talk with as her weaving adventures take her all over the world. Five hours flew! And I walked away with a beautiful wall hanging and a rare experience weaving on a Rio Grande loom.
