What you'll do

We'll start at the head race of Holyoke's 3-level canal system and work our way to the tail race, encountering history and architecture at every step. Our small group will tour venture down into the bowels of the first building built in the first industrial planned city. You'll see how water moved through the building. You'll see a hydroelectic pressure case up close, learn how mechanical power worked and then you'll meet our 2 generators, the D & G wheels. This tour is on private property owned by Open Square and is ONLY available to you via Airbnb.

Maggie

I'm the Communications Director of the US's largest ZERO NET ENERGY mixed-use development, Open Square. I've lived in Holyoke for 10 years and have been telling the story of the water wheels and electricity production at Open Square for 10 years. The small hydro electric generators at Open Square are unique and interesting. You'll walk through the industrial history of an American post-industrial city.

Where you'll be

We will conduct our tour at Open Square, meeting in our main lobby. From there, we will start at the first level canal, explain Holyoke's canal system's history and current operation. From there we'll explore the head race and grates. We'll then move inside the building, following the course of water into the turbine and generator. We'll show you how we control the turbines and then we'll follow the water out into the tailrace.
