What you'll do

Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic processes. But unlike traditional chemical photography, cyanotype chemicals are sensitive only to ultraviolet light, which means you don’t need a traditional darkroom to print images with them. In my two-hour workshop, students will actively create their own botanical-themed works of art using botanical remnants, other natural materials, and the power of the sun. In this workshop, we’ll show some examples of what’s possible with the cyanotype (sunprinting) process, and an introduction to the chemicals and equipment needed. Students will create images on both paper and fabric, and have at least three pieces to take home, as well as a resource list and knowledge for how to set up for and make their own cyanotypes. Because of the nature of sunprinting, THIS WORKSHOP IS WEATHER-DEPENDENT -- in case of inclement weather, class will happen using an electric UV light box indoors.

Jocelyn

I am a fine artist working in mixed media and photography, living with my husband and three children Johnson City, Tennessee. After my college graduation, I showed work in and around the D.C./Baltimore area, then spent the next several years working as a commercial photographer. Since moving to Tennessee in 2012, I've been working with a new focus on alternative photographic processes and mixed media. Recent solo shows include Nelson Fine Art (Johnson City, TN), and the William King Museum of Art (Abingdon, VA). Recent group shows include Lightbox Photographic (Astoria, OR), The Image Flow (Mill Valley, CA), and PhotoSynthesis (Manchester, CT), and the Academy Center for the Arts (Lynchburg, VA). My work has been published in SHOTS, The HAND Magazine, and others.

Where you'll be

All my workshops are conducted in my home studio where I produce my work--utilizing my garage workspace and surrounding outside area to create prints in the sun while you enjoy the lush shade of the silver maple and small pollinator garden nearby.
