What you'll do

Step through time as you are immersed in stories of Hawaiʻi from the year 1700 to present day, and learn of what truly lies "beyond paradise."

Storytelling is a Hawaiian tradition as our language was originally a spoken language – missionaries later introduced the writing system that we use today.

This truly is a unique opportunity to spend time with a native Hawaiian and to learn about our kingdom, its history, and our culture. All of that interwoven with music + ancient games & activities.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
* Rated PG-13

* In-depth 2 hour session packed with knowledge.

* Account for traffic – Our meeting location is in central Maui. 30-45 minutes from Kihei, 45 mins - 1 hour from Lahaina.

* Dress comfortably – Wailuku is warm in the afternoon & cold by evening.

I am a kanaka (Hawaiian) born and raised on Maui. I've seen the good and bad of these islands, and I've also lived it.

In 2013, I graduated from a prestigious Hawaiian school, which helped in my understanding of the corruption not only here at home but all over the world.

Where you'll be

This experience is held at my house, which is located along the slopes of Mauna Kahalawai (the west Maui mountains). Enjoy gorgeous views of the mountain from the comfort of my yard. Around the property, you will also find a variety of trees and plants that are often associated with our Hawaiian culture.

This is undoubtedly a must-do activity in Maui! Ian has created a beautiful and safe space for folks to learn about a history and modern movement within Hawaii that is often erased in conversations we have today. He is charismatic, energetic, and animated - a master of storytelling that had our group tearing up at some points and laughing out loud at others. He met our questions about whether we were appreciating Hawaiian culture in a respectful manner with great kindness and wisdom. This was an incredible, moving, and meaningful experience that I would recommend to anyone. Delighted and grateful to have walked away with a greater sense of awareness and even more so a new friend in Ian.

WOW. This experience is Beyond worth it — if you’re in Maui and love museums and/or remotely appreciate history, culture, and the arts, you must give this a go. This was such an incredibly valuable and intimate show/history lesson that made us appreciate our time on Maui in a whole new light… I am so glad we did this on our 2nd day of the trip, as it has bestowed on us a different kind of appreciation for our time here. Ian is a masterful storyteller and his love and passion for the history of his people is evident in the way he carefully crafted this experience. PLUS he had us hooked on every word within the first 5 minutes and 2 hours just flew by, he has a special presence! I really hope he can expand this event in some way… he truly could run his own cultural center or museum! Mahalo for this Ian, we appreciate you so much!!!!

This was absolutely outstanding. Hawaii may be part of the US now, but when we mainlanders come to visit, we owe native Hawaiians the respect of learning and owning the fact that we took land, culture, and rule away from a sovereign nation, and that we’ve made minimal efforts to come to terms with it. Ian did a superb job of describing Hawaii from Kamehameha I to the present day and weaving music, artifacts, and even spear throwing (!!!) into his excellent storytelling. His love for his culture, his home, and his people was evident. I learned a lot and am honored he shared his Hawaiian heritage with me and his thoughtful and compassionate perspectives and encouraged my curiosity. These dialogues should be as much as part of the experience of visiting Hawaii as surfing and snorkeling.
