“We had an amazing time at Yolo, in the village of Rho. From our arrival to our departure we were made feel as part of the village. Moustapha and Mokhtar looked after all our needs, with Valerie checking in throughout our stay. Mokhtar took us out on trips to go fishing in the mangrove, to see the local salt fields, to get to Diofior etc. all with his trusty horse and cart. The horse and cart had become our functional transport from A to B...our children had a great time as apprentice drivers. Mokhtar is so kind and great with children, he made them laugh and made them feel safe. Mokhtar also kept us company and despite us having very little French we had many conversations and funny moments. Mokhtar brought us around the village and over the 2,5 hour tour we met almost everyone and have been invited into many local houses. The hospitality of the local people knows no end. Amy, our cool and housekeeper, is an amazing skilled young lady who treated us to a different local dish every day- breakfast, lunch and dinner. She works hard and she’s extremely pleasant, and has a good bit of English. Thanks Amy! Moustapha also brought us around to see a school that was opened with support of Espoir Des Enfantes. We got a chance to go to the classrooms and meet the children, the principal and even exchange some music- our son played some Irish whistle to the class and the children sang a Senegalese anthemn in exchange! Next we were brought to the hospital/maternity centre which will be opening in April with a temporary help from doctors from France to start with. There’s second hand hospital beds for and cots there ready to go! It’s an inspiring project and we could only imagine how much work Valerie and her local team must have put into it. You will not get such an insight into real life in Senegal anywhere else!!!! The camp was comfortable, spotless clean everyday, visited by locals to interact but yet very private. The camp is also run completely on solar energy. The showers are a trickle at times, but that all makes the experience so real. The place is stripped of the luxuries of the first world but you get the luxury of time, mindful living and real experience. As a family we could not recommend it enough. Our children loved it, the excitement was high, every day. They have learned so much from the local kids- how to share one football with the whole village! If we are ever back in Senegal we would love to revisit. Thanks to all!”
