The space
One of our recent guests described Danegelts quite well in her review:

"Danegelts is an historic property which has had sensitive modern adjustments to make it a beautiful and very comfortable place to stay."

That's pretty much exactly what we set out to achieve.

We're lucky enough to live in this amazing Grade-II listed house, which dates back to the 16th Century, and we're very excited that it's now set up to be able to host families with children in the Family Suite, which combines the Waveney Room (master bedroom) with the interconnected Kingfisher Room (which can accommodate up to three children, or two adults, or a combination to suit your family size!).

As an interconnected suite, this pair of rooms is great for families — but do note that, while the two rooms are separated by a door, access to the Kingfisher Room is via the Waveney Room. We've included photos showing how this works, but do feel free to contact us before booking if you want to check that this will work for you in terms of privacy.

Note — if there are only two of you, you can book the Waveney Room master bedroom on its own, on a separate listing here: https://airbnb.co.uk/h/waveney-retreat

Guest access
The family suite at Danegelts offers you a unique space in a historic house.

Starting upstairs with your sleeping quarters:

The Waveney Room is the master bedroom, with a solid oak king bed with top-of-the-range Otty hybrid mattress. Many guests have rated it the most comfortable bed they've slept in.

You then come to the connected Kingfisher Room. Perfect for up to three children, but also comfortable for up to two adults plus a child, it features a double bed and (optionally) a futon-style child's mattress bed.

(If you prefer to have your child in the same room as you, we can put the futon mattress in the Waveney Room.)

Your bathroom (private to you and your family/group only, never shared with any other guests) is accessed from the Waveney Room, and has lovely views out over the garden and meadows (as do all the bedrooms).

Now, downstairs: you have three rooms to spread out, enjoy and relax in. Again, all private for you and your family/group, never shared with any other guests.

There's the main sitting room, and also the library with over 1000 books, a cosy sofa, and a piano (which you're welcome to play!).

And then there's the dining room, where we'll serve you your breakfast in the mornings as well as (by arrangement) dinner in the evenings. The rest of the day, the dining table is available to you for family activities, or as office space. It's for you to enjoy. You'll also find a tea and coffee station in the dining room, with fresh fruit and snacks available through the day.

There's an entrance hallway where you can hang your coats, leave your outdoor shoes and change into your slippers (we provide cosy comfortable washable slippers for you to borrow if you'd like to) — or, if you're going out, perhaps change into your wellies for a hike across the meadows (we have a few pairs that you can borrow).

And finally, outside. We're lucky to have seven acres of private meadows and grazing marshes leading down to the River Waveney, which you're welcome to explore. It's a natural wonderland and will be a delight for your inquisitive (and energetic) youngsters (and old-sters too!). Just ask us for tips on the best routes to follow.

Other things to note
Danegelts is almost 500 years old, and as a result it's perhaps not quite as "accessible" as a house built to modern building regulations.

A note for tall people:

There are quite a few low doorways, ceilings and beams in various parts of the house — do remember to DUCK. (We will remind you of this again when you arrive!)

A note on accessibility for people with reduced mobility:

In keeping with the house's age and character:

- The stairs are quite narrow and twisty-turny. (But they do have a good strong hand-rail so you've always got something to hold on to.)
- The bathroom and loo are upstairs.
- There are small steps up / down between many of the rooms.

If you have any concerns about mobility and accessibility, do contact us before booking so we can help you decide whether it's suitable for you. For 99% of people it will be completely fine, but better to check in advance if you're not sure. If you have very restricted mobility it might not be the right choice for you, and unfortunately because of the multiple steps upstairs bathroom it is not suitable for wheelchair users.
