All about Hawkshead

Villages don’t come much more picture-perfect than Hawkshead. Located in the glorious Vale of Esthwaite, in the heart of the English Lake District, it’s as if the whole area was lifted straight from the imagination of Beatrix Potter, whose husband actually came from the town. His former offices are now a museum to the writer. The community is a mishmash of tiny whitewashed cottages, winding lanes, and ancient coaching inns — it’s the ideal spot to start your Lake District adventures.

To add to the antiquated air, cars are banned from the village completely (there’s a large car park just outside of town), so it really does feel like you’ve been suddenly dropped into the past. Hawkshead dates back to Norse times and later thrived as a market town, particularly in the 17th century, the time many of its historic buildings date from. Plus the scenery surrounding Hawkshead is some of the finest in the Lake District, with the tranquil lake of Esthwaite Water fringed by lush meadows and the wooded slopes of Grizedale Forest to the south, Lake Windermere to the east, and Lake Coniston to the west.

What are the top things to do in Hawkshead?

Hill Top

Two miles south of Hawkshead is the farmhouse that author Beatrix Potter purchased in 1905 that became the inspiration, and setting, for some of her most famous tales, including Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. Now looked after by the National Trust, it’s crammed full of memorabilia and art collected by the beloved children’s writer. But be warned, it’s a highly popular destination, so try visiting later in the day to avoid the crowds.

Hawkshead Grammar School

How often do you get the chance to view an actual piece of furniture vandalised by a leading poet? It’s one of the many attractions at Hawkshead Grammar School, which was founded in 1585 and educated future poet laureate William Wordsworth, who carved his name onto his desk. The school is now a museum with artefacts dating back to the 16th century, offering insight into education throughout the ages.

Grizedale Forest

Of course you want to be out and about when you’re in the Lake District, and a great place to start is in this forest to the south of the town. Crammed full of trails, adventure activities, and unique sculptures hidden amongst the trees, it has something for everyone. The more extreme visitor can sample the Go Ape assault courses, while those of a more sedate nature can enjoy the stunning views and fascinating wildlife.
