If a host asks for more money

Hosts are not permitted to collect any fees related to Airbnb reservations outside of our platform, with limited exceptions:

  • In select cases, certain mandatory fees or security deposits may show in a listing’s price breakdown at checkout that are due to the host at property.
  • Hosts may collect taxes at check-in, but only if these are stated in the listing description.
  • Hotels may collect an incidental hold, but only if this is stated in the listing description.
  • Hosts may charge for optional add-ons such as upgrades or access to certain amenities, but only if they are clearly stated in the listing description prior to booking and collected using the Resolution Centre. Hotels may collect payment for optional add-ons off of the Airbnb platform where it is part of their standard procedures.
  • Your host files an AirCover for Hosts request for damage that occurred during your stay, experience or service. AirCover claims must be paid on Airbnb.

Adding additional guests, pets or nights to your reservation may impact costs. For home stays, guests and hosts must use the change reservation tool to make these changes.

When to dispute

With few exceptions, we prohibit hosts from:

  • Failing to disclose reservation fees at the time of booking
  • Requesting, sending or receiving payment for any reservation fee off of Airbnb

Please review our Off-platform and Fee Transparency Policy for the list of what is prohibited and any exceptions. If a host tries to charge you for something that violates our policies or attempts to charge you off the Airbnb platform instead of using the Resolution Centre, please report it to us immediately.

We don’t allow hosts to charge a pet fee or cleaning fees for animal hair or dander to guests who are travelling with Service Animals anywhere or Emotional Support Animals in places where applicable laws prohibit the extra fees, such as New York State and California.

How to pay

If you agree with the charge, pay the host directly through the Resolution Centre. Be sure to keep all payment transactions on Airbnb – otherwise, we can’t help with issues related to off-site or cash payments.

In limited cases, your host can request payments outside of the Airbnb platform for a fee included in the listing’s price breakdown at checkout or a tax that’s allowed to be collected outside Airbnb and was included in the listing description (or house rules). In either case, you can pay your host in person, using a payment app, or using the Resolution Centre.

Hotels may also collect payment off of the Airbnb platform for optional fees where it is in the course of normal business practices (ex: parking). Other hosts must collect payment for optional fees using the Resolution Centre.

Payments for optional fees (ex: parking, amenity upgrades) must be collected on our platform using the Resolution Centre.
