Apartment openspace with kitchen, bedroom and bathroom
“Teofila’s place is stunning and the views are unbeatable!! We absolutely loved our stay, it was perfect and had everything we needed. It was clean, comfortable and had a huge amount of space for the two of us for a two night stay. We’d love to come back in the summer so we can make use of eating outside on the terrace and use the hot tub! Amazing value for money, and the hosts were friendly and always quick to respond when we had a question. Thank you for the outstanding hospitality! We’ll definitely be back in future :)”
A place to rest and relax, near the sea. The house's architectural design is inspired by the typical Pico house and was built almost solely with native materials to the Island, such as basalt stone and criptomeria wood. A holiday home, to rest, and relax, by the sea. The architecture of the house intends to approach the typical house of Pico and in its construction were used, almost exclusively, endogenous materials, such as the basalt stone and the wood of criptoméria.
“Casa Antiga Vinha was more beautiful and peaceful than we could have imagined. On three different occasions we spotted a pod of resident Risso dolphins from the front terrace. There was plenty of space for just the two of us in the house with two bedrooms, a loft, two bathrooms, and plenty of pillows, blankets, and closet space. There’s an espresso maker, tea kettle, and the kitchen is well kitted with dishes and pots and pans for people who enjoy cooking (basic supplies include: olive oil, vinegar, coffee, s&p, and a complimentary bottle of local white wine). There are a few Cory’s Shearwater seabirds nesting nearby just after dusk with an eerie call that is startling when you first hear it. We came to appreciate their unique calls once we learned more about them (thank you, Google). The low female calls sound akin to the sound of a didgeridoo. The wifi is spotty and works best when left in the front living room windowsill. On the upside it’s a pocket wifi which makes it portable for day trips in the car. From the moment we booked Casa de Antigua Vinha, Steffi was in touch offering to arrange a rental car for us and providing us with helpful information about the tours available through her guide services, Hominis Natura. The rental car rates were good (€34/day for a Fiat Panda for two weeks). The car was ready to pick up when we arrived at Pico airport which saved us the time and bother of arranging it ourselves. Steffi gave us a very warm welcome when we arrived at Casa Antigua Vinha and provided us with wetsuits and snorkeling gear we rented from her during our two-week stay on the island. She and her husband, Nilton, live on the other side of the vineyard adjacent to Casa de Antigua Vinha. There is plenty of privacy at the house with a lovely sunny sea view in front and a shaded yard with a hammock in back. On our first day Steffi arranged a whale watching tour for us with Futurismo in the nearby town of Lajes. In a stroke of luck we were only two of four guests on the zodiac with the knowledgeable marine biologist, Maria, describing the local sea life. Although we didn’t see any whales we were fortunate to come across several different pods of playful striped, spotted, and Risso dolphins. One pod frolicked close enough to our boat that we could have touched them. It was a magical experience having them swim alongside and under and around us! I’ll post the fun video of our dolphin encounters on Steffi’s Hominis Natura Facebook page. We loved Steffi’s friendly manner and her engaging guiding services which were refreshingly private and personalized. We booked a few experiences with her because of the personal attention she provided and her good-natured manner. We spent one day with Steffi snorkelling and touring the local natural sea pools where we saw some underwater basalt formations and many colourful fish. She was even so kind as to take photos of us while we were snorkelling and accompanied us while we shopped at the local grocer on the way home to help us select the best local cheese (Omorro Queijo Curado), white wine (Frei Gigante), and gin (Rocha Negra). Be sure to try the light and fresh locally-grown lemons and oranges available in Lajes’ supermarket (I bought them all when we were there!). On another day we rented Steffi’s sturdy two-person sea kayak and explored the shoreline between Santa Cruz and Pontas Negras. On our way out and back schools of slender flying fish skipped across the water in front of our kayak as of out of a Dr. Seuss story. Don’t miss the chance to go spear fishing with Steffi! My partner, Chris, wanted to try spear fishing so Steffi arranged a fishing licence for him and provided him with the gear and a lesson in the sea in front of the Casa. I rented a kayak from her to noodle along the shoreline while they fished. Steffi’s lesson was so good that he caught three fresh fish (Vejas) that Steffi and Nilton grilled a few hours later on a wood fire they prepared at their charming seaside bush camp in front of their home. We brought rice and veg and they brought yummy appetizers. We chatted while enjoying Chris’ fresh-caught fish and local wine while watching the sun set over the ocean. Steffi and her husband, Nilton, were gracious hosts who made us feel welcome and at home during our stay on Pico. Many thanks to you both for helping us create these lovely memories. Obrigada! Até logo, Lynn”
Casa da Vinha is a cozy and ideal house for a relaxing holiday. It is located in São João do Pico, a quiet and calm place. The breathtaking view of Pico Mountain embellishes São joão and the sea, so close, fills the heart with peace. Casa da Vinha has a magnificent view of the sea that welcomes our guests.
“We can only recommend this apartment! The house is located on top of cliffs with a beautiful view of the sea. We even saw some dolphins while sitting on the balcony. Just a few meters downhill is a natural swimming pool. Perfect for relaxing and a brief dip in the Atlantic after a day of hiking or sightseeing. The flat is very comfy furnished with a well equipped kitchen. Jose welcomed us very friendly with some local chess and little gifts. We felt very much at home during our stay!”
