Why locals recommend it

About an hour north of the city centre, this long beach is good for swimming and surfing, with a surf school at its southern end. I’ve even seen penguins here on occasion. At the top of the beach is Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Sydney’s most northern point, and the perfect perch for spotting coastal birds and whale watching from May through to November. Two tracks lead to Barrenjoey Lighthouse: The Access Trail is a gentle incline that takes around 15 minutes, while the Smugglers Track is a steeper incline, with steps, that takes 10 minutes. You can visit the historic 1881 lighthouse on your own, or join guided tours every Sunday.

Taking the ferry to Palm Beach is just the right day trip. Pack a picnic or if you're up for fancy, make a booking at the Barrenjoey House.
