The space
Explore the “golden triangle” in the heart of Provence at Mas Canto Perdrix. Set just outside the town of Fontvieille between Arles and the stunning Alpilles mountain range, this luxury vacation rental in the south of France is surrounded by charming villages, olive groves, vineyards and ancient Roman ruins. Lovingly restored interiors and five bedrooms in a main house and two guest houses let you spend a tranquil holiday at the estate or use the villa as a base for discovering the region’s hidden gems with friends and family.
Peaceful and utterly private, Mas Canto Perdrix is in the middle of a verdant landscape, where fruit and almond trees shade the garden paths and lavender and rosemary plants scent the air. You can even watch as olives from the grounds are pressed into olive oil on-site (and buy a bottle or two as a souvenir). If you’re visiting during the summer, you’ll want to spend your stay in a lounger on the terrace by the pool, which boasts panoramic views of the countryside. An adjacent lounge area and outdoor kitchen make it easy to sip pre-dinner cocktails while preparing a meal on the barbecue, and there are three al-fresco dining areas to choose from. In cooler weather, stock the wine fridge with new finds from neighboring vineyards and cozy up to the fireplace.
Though the villa dates from 1860, it was recently restored by Peter Erikson and Raphael Hage. The refreshed property is a beautiful combination of the quaint and the modern, where traditional architectural details sit comfortably beside contemporary furnishings. A stately fireplace, gently sloping ceiling and soft tile floor anchor the great room, but a metal-edged coffee table brings it into the twenty-first century. Choose a book from the built-in bookshelves and settle into the inviting gray sofas or mustard-colored wingbacks, or gather in schoolhouse-style chairs for a meal at the round dining table. The fully equipped kitchen is all bistro chic, with marble counters, stainless steel appliances and navy cabinetry.
In spite of the villa’s secluded feel, it’s convenient to several towns and local attractions. Make the 5-minute drive to Fontvieille or Paradou for dining, shopping and the ambience of a small Provençal town, or the 12 km drive to Arles to see its Roman amphitheater and the masterpieces at the Espace Van Gogh. The famous—and photogenic—Pont du Gard is 37 km away by car, the beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is 65 km away, and at 75 km and 90 km, respectively, even Aix-en-Provence and Marseille are close enough for a day trip. When it’s time to leave, fly out of the Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes airport, 40 km away, or Marseille Provence Airport, 75 km away.
