“Our best Rajasthan experience till date. After having visited the traditional places like Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur/Kumbalgarh/Ranakpur etc. in the past, we finally visited the Shekhawati region. Based on a review of options on Air bnb and other travel reviews, we had settled on Narayan Niwas, due to three reasons 1) place seemed different from other being more fort like 2) the good reviews about the food and 3) general cleanliness. And boy, did the place deliver beyond our expectations. Narayan Niwas, is the largest part of Fort Mahansar, with other parts owned by other family members - all independant with their respective entrances. This part is an absolute gem. The original structure is still in place and the authenticity adds to the experience. The place feels much better live than the pictures. We were in room 5 which is slightly higher up, and with hindsight exactly what we wanted. An additonal flight of stairs led us to the top of the fort, from where we experienced both glorious sunrises and sunsets with some nice ginger tea. One unique thing we also enjoyed was viewing the Train passing by in the evening in the dark. Things to remember: one does have to climb some stairs to access the rooms. Retaining its originality does mean that certain things e.g. bathrooms will be simple (but clean). Also, the family stays here, so good to keep an open mind and not compare to hotels. The food was easily the best in Shekhawati and it was a challenge not to overeat. Mrs. Singh supervises the kitchen herself normally while during our stay, one of her daughters from Jodhpur there for holidays was helping out. We could interact with other guests over a bonfire in the evenings. A special local liquor was also brought out when we were there and it was simply awesome. We stayed for 3 nights and travelled to various places like Mandawa, Ramgarh, laxmangarh, Dundlot, Ramgarh etc. Thakur Maheshwar Singh arranged a good guide, Rajesh, to take us to these places and we enjoyed the trips. Last but not the least, what made our trip truly special was the interaction with the family and the warmth. we were additionally fortunate that their daughter, son in law and grandson were also at Mahansar at the same time. Our son had a gala time playing with the grandson, including kite flying. Our son has already decided on visiting them at Jodhpur. (It turned out coincidentally that six years back we had stayed at a property related to the son in law at Jodhpur). If it was an option, would have given a rating higher than 5 stars.”
