Hosts on Airbnb are known for their creative, thoughtful spaces that make guests feel right at home. But what if you could build anything? That’s where the Unique Airbnb Fund comes in, which we’ve created to empower you to make your most extraordinary hosting dreams come true.

We’re giving $100,000 USD* each to 10 existing or aspiring hosts with unusual design dreams. That’s right: If you can dream it, we’d like to help you create it. Here’s everything you need to know to apply:

    The basics

    • What kind of project is eligible for the Unique Airbnb Fund? Whether you want to remodel a private room in your home or you own a few apartments, we welcome all creative design dreams as long as you own the property, it’s residential, and you can demonstrate that you have the necessary legal permissions to build your space.

We’re open to any stage of completion: If your property is already quirky and just needs an upgrade, feel free to apply. We also welcome concepts that are in progress but need extra funding. And, of course, we want to hear about projects that are only in the idea stage and could use some cash to get started. Learn more about eligibility in the Official Rules.

    • What do you mean when you say “unique”? We’re interested in ideas that incorporate unusual or inventive shapes, themes, or objects that are creative or surprising. We’re especially curious about cohesive, immersive concepts where the interior design reflects the aesthetic and theme of the larger idea.

    • Who are the judges? Our panel of judges includes Superhost Kristie, one of Airbnb’s most creative hosts, who has already found success by listing her own distinctive property; actor and personal style icon Billy Porter; and renowned architecture firm MVRDV.

    • How do I apply? Starting March 10, 2020, eligible applicants can apply here by answering a few questions and submitting a personal essay about why their story and unique space idea make them the perfect fit for the Unique Airbnb Fund. Applications close at 11:59 PM EST on April 15, 2020. See the Official Rules for additional details.
    • When will you choose the winners? We’ll select and inform the 10 winners in May 2020.

    • Do I have to be a host on Airbnb already? Nope! Everyone is encouraged to apply, whether you’re an established Superhost or you’re new to Airbnb. Winners will need to sign up for a host account if they don’t have one already, and host exclusively on Airbnb for at least 12 months after their dream space is ready for guests.

    • Can I apply from anywhere in the world? Anyone who lives in Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, mainland China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the U.K., and the U.S. is eligible to apply, subject to our Official Rules.

    • Where can I read the Official Rules? The full Unique Airbnb Fund Official Rules can be found here.

Need some inspiration? Here are some over-the-top properties on Airbnb:

    • A potato you can sleep in: Host Kristie repurposed a giant six-ton potato created by the Idaho Potato Commission for its 75th anniversary. These days, the one-room dwelling sits on 500 acres of Idaho farmland. Kristie is also one of the judges!
    • A boot from a fairytale: There’s a nursery rhyme about an old woman who lived in a shoe, but host Judy in New Zealand made it a reality with a one-bedroom, two-story hideaway on the Tasman Coast.
    • A cozy covered wagon: On a Native American-owned working sheep ranch in Arizona, guests can stay in an actual covered wagon. The best part might be taking in the stars in the high desert sky.
    • A two-story dog: A beagle-shaped house in rural Idaho offers sunset views and plenty of chances to take photos for Instagram. Hosts Frances and Dennis built the custom two-bedroom “dog house,” which, of course, welcomes dogs.
    • A five-bedroom snake: This serpentine house just northwest of Mexico City is truly fantastical. From sleeping inside a structure based on a Mesoamerican deity to wandering the gardens, guests likely won’t forget their stay here.

Whether you have an extra room you’ve always hoped to renovate or you have an entirely new structure you want to build, we can’t wait to empower you to make those unique ideas happen.

*less any required tax withholdings and subject to contest milestone fulfillment, including but not limited to building and/or construction permit approval, sourcing of materials. See Official Rules for details.
