Interaction with guests

I'm home most of the time.

If you're interested, my husband and I love sharing information about our innovative home. As well as its extraordinary solar passive performance (20-24 degrees every hour of the year with no heating apart from the sun), it's designed using Feng Shui principles, and built with healthy building materials. The factory set up to prefabricate Asante is now a thriving new Tasmanian business.

We had a short film made of the building of Asante and are happy to screen it for you during your stay. Asante means "thank you" in Swahili - and our connection to Africa is a whole other story we love to share!

We love recommending activities including local walks and drives, day tours and things to do in and around Hobart city.

Whether you're interested in active pursuits, sightseeing, wildlife, boating, history, or all of the above, we'll put you on the right track! And we're foodies - happy to share our favourite cafes, bars, restaurants and wineries.

The neighbourhood

When you've had your dose of our beautiful bay beaches, a stroll around this peaceful part of the world reveals some quirky original beach shacks amongst the family homes. There's a lovely sense of community here and a fabulous small IGA supermarket that the locals treasure.

Nearby Ralphs Bay Conservation Area is home to migratory birds from Siberia in spring and other endangered birds and fish year round. Bush walking trails and wild ocean beaches abound on our peninsula.

Getting around

You'll probably need a car: there's a reliable local bus service to Hobart city, but the bus stop is about 4 kilometres away, so the part of the return trip when you come to our hill is somewhat strenuous!

Asante's location on Hobart's eastern shore makes for easy access to the beautiful South Arm Peninsula, historic Richmond township, the Coal River Valley region with its wineries and farms, and Port Arthur on the stunning Tasman Peninsula.

The 20 minute drive to Hobart city is easy (part freeway): there are just 2 traffic lights between Asante and the edge of Hobart city! You can easily fill several days exploring what Hobart has to offer, including the extraordinary MONA gallery which we recommend visiting by ferry from the Hobart docks.

From the city, freeways provide easy access to the Huon Valley, Bruny Island, many wine regions and the rest of our beautiful state.

Driving between Asante and Hobart airport takes less than 20 minutes.

Other things to note

Asante is a non smoking venue.
We have an affectionate, well-behaved, older female short-haired cat.
You'll probably need a car (see Getting Around section).
Lauderdale has two new restaurants: Driftwood and Thai Takeaway.

House Rules
Check in is anytime after 2PM

No smoking inside or outside. We don't have lots of other house rules, but will demonstrate a couple of Asante's quirky features on your arrival.

We appreciate our guests taking good care of our still-new home and letting us know if something goes wrong. We're always open to requests: we'd much rather you asked for or about something than leave disappointed.

Please ask us ahead of time if you wish to invite visitors during your stay.

Again, it's hard to find words: spectacular water views from all the huge windows. Such a clean, comfortable, beautifully designed home gave me such a peaceful and nourishing rest. Margaret and Tony are lovely hosts: very generous and helpful while giving all the space you need. 5 stars are not enough. PS I think it's only 2km to the bus stop to Hobart :-)

What can I say? Hopefully by the time you are reading this there will be more photos of the whole house and views. It’s stunning, really! 180 degrees of water views. Gorgeous unique contemporary solar passive home with beautiful feng shui design elements. Spotless but not uptight. Hosted by the people who created it. They are very friendly, generous knowledgeable people who can tell you all about the house (and so much more). imagine they will become Super Hosts very quickly. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to stay, I had the house saved as Dream Home, not expecting I would get to stay because of the distance from transport. Excellent communication all the way through and many generous offers of support, rides etc. The place is well described except for the wow factor: that has to be experienced. The feel of the home is so nurturing. I went for R&R and I got that absolutely. The room is a little separate from the main house so it’s possible to close a couple of doors and have as much privacy as you need PLUS you still get your own gorgeous view from the North facing bedroom window. Yes a car would be helpful but my hosts very kindly took me on their Sunday trip to the Hobart Farm Gate Markets and it is possible to walk downhill to the bus stop (approx 4km if you are a walker like me) and get a ride home with Tony after work from Hobart or Margaret on certain days. But actually, there is no need to leave. It’s the most beautiful home in stunning surroundings (and walks), awesome hosts and even some local wallabies and lots of birds for tourists and Australians alike :-) And if you are traveling around by car it would be the perfect place to pause or to keep as home base for driving around the area. Margaret and Tony went above and beyond to make it the retreat I was needing while also being social and friendly. (They even invited me to their niece's birthday dinner). I will be back for more!

Margaret and Tony were so completely welcoming, I felt immediately at home. The room was clean, modern, beautiful, with a lovely view out of the window. The bed was extremely comfortable and I loved having a desk in the room, so I could work at it when I wanted to. The views from the dinner table made the continental breakfast even more delicious. The house is also a model of environmental awareness. Triple glazing keeps it warm all year round apparently, it also keeps it silent. There are many more eco-friendly features, so if you want to learn how to create an environmentally friendly house, you can learn a great deal from Tony and Margaret. And you can experience it by staying. I went swimming at a local beach, 10 minutes walk away. Tony and Margaret were wonderfully helpful in sharing their love of the region's food and wine - yummy! I couldn't recommend this highly enough.
