This unique place has a style all its own.
The Orchard Close Art House is a mid-century design 1960s semi-detached house in the West Suffolk village of Great Livermere.
It is a warm, light airy space filled with paintings and artefacts created by artist Mark Copeland. It also houses the amazing Insect Circus Museum (as recently featured on Drew Pritchard's Salvage Hunters) in which staying guests are welcome to browse.
We welcome everyone and respect equality, diversity and inclusion.
No WIFI.

The space
Enter the house into small hallway, room for coats and shoes, with a small seperate office through a door with a desk to work at.

The main room is an open plan living/dining area which is light and bright with a mid-century look. The walls are adorned with Mark’s intriguing paintings.

Off the dining area is the kitchen which is compact but well appointed and includes a cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and washing machine.

In the corner of the living area there is a small stage with a dressing up box suitable for charades, performance and creative play.

The Insect Circus Museum is situated in a room off the main living space.
this unique museum displays a stunning array of costumes, props, puppets, toys and ephemera from the extraordinary collection of the Insect Circus Society. Spanning more than three centuries, and covering many continents, this is undeniably the finest museum of its kind in the world.

Drew Pritchard from Salvage Hunters says that it's "in my top three days ever in nearly thirty years of buying. It's one of the most joyous and unexpected experiences not only of my buying and antiques career, but of my life. A guy in a shed in Suffolk does that, and that's magical!"

The dining space looks onto a walled patio garden which has an outside dining area and special rainproof throne!

Up the colourful stairs there is a landing off which is the bathroom with a toilet, basin, small bath and electric shower.
Next to it there is a separate toilet with a basin.

There are two double bedrooms, with standard double size beds, and a room with two adult sized bunk beds.
The property can sleep up to 6 adults.

The house is electrically heated throughout with wall panel heaters. In the living space there is a fully controllable electric stove.

The whole house is thoroughly cleaned between guests and bedding and towels are washed on hot.
Pets are welcome but please note there is a small additional charge.
Wifi is provided.

The house has no Wifi or TV but it does have 4G. The In-house entertainment makes up for this with a record player (with an eclectic selection of records), books, games, dressing up clothes and The Insect Circus Museum.

In designing the house, as much as practicable has been sourced second hand and creatively reused - furniture and flower pots, curtains and blinds, crockery and cutlery, wood and paving!

Neighbourhood highlights

Great Livermere is a small farming village in West Suffolk about 6 miles from Bury St Edmunds - a popular tourist destination justly named “the Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk”.
Great Livermere has a ghostly history, a surprising mere, good birdwatching with a rich mix of birds from waterbirds to birds of prey, an unusual thatched church (open in daylight hours) and various glorious walks around the village, mere and local countryside.
It’s great for walking, cycling, bird watching, being inspired and creative.
The village has no amenities but in the nearby village of Troston, less than a mile walk up a permissive path, there is an awarding winning pub - The Bull Freehouse.
Also within a short driving distance there are various takeaways.
Bury St Edmunds is a busy market town with a rich history, two museums, gardens with ruins, a cathedral and a vibrant centre, a popular place for shopping, with a twice weekly market and occasional specialised markets.
Norwich, Cambridge and Ipswich are all less than an hours drive away or are accessible from Thurston train station which is about 4 miles away.
Locally, there are lots of wonderful places to visit amongst which are Thetford Forest, West Stow Anglo Saxon village, Fullers Mill garden, Lackford Lakes and Rougham Control Tower.
