What a gem! A birthday getaway with my husband, this property is a private oasis, the hosts are gracious and kind. The cottage far exceeded our expectations - it's roomier and more charming than the photos let on, plus thoughtful additions. Much has been said about the shower in previous reviews - it doesn't disappoint. The bed and pillows are great - I usually sleep terribly in hotels - and I slept like a baby here (that says A LOT). It's a totally easy stroll into town, and to the legendary Dipsea Trail - which we hiked to our utter enjoyment, without needing our car at all (just an easy shuttle back to the top of the Dipsea Stairs, from Stinson Beach). Stretching our sore legs on the green grass in the backyard, under the fig tree (eating figs, of course), listening to the birds chirp, and gazing up at the redwoods... this is a place we will absolutely return to. Hopefully for us, none of you book it when we want to go back. :)

Amber, Thank you for the thoughtful suggestion about adding the shelf in the bathroom. I've been thinking about that and will have it done in the next week. Warm regards, Joel

This is a cozy cottage in a beautiful garden setting. It is well-maintained and has a full kitchen, and it's a short walk to downtown restaurants. Joel and Jane are wonderful hosts and welcomed us with delicious snacks and homemade jam!

Beautiful location, both in terms of the immediate property and the surrounding neighborhood. Secluded and peaceful at night. Excellent shower unit and bathroom. Easy walking access to central Mill Valley and parking was straightforward too. Friendly host!

Very nice and comfortable one-room cottage within gated yard of residential home. Private and cozy, and very close to redwood parkland. Owners have been very thoughtful in providing all the amenities one might need and we felt they were more than willing to address any of our needs. The renovated bath and shower were top-flight, what you would have in your own home. Absolutely would return.

This place was perfect for a romantic getaway with my boyfriend. A studio cottage, with kitchenette, breakfast nook, fireplace, and reading area. Beautifully furnished and feels way bigger than the space. We stayed here very comfortably. Highlights included the outdoor gardens for morning coffee, a beautiful walk in the redwoods behind the house, centrally located to downtown, Larkspur, Tiburon, hikes. Plus, I got to play with a puppy while I was there, couldn't ask for more! A beautiful place to stay, will definitely come back.

I paid what I felt was a premium price for an AirBnB property so that I could have use of a kitchenette. The kitchenette was barely functional, and the appointments were more shabby than chic. The beds sheet had a rip in it, the coffee pot would not keep the coffee hot. The salt shaker was corroded and cutlery was rusted. There were no cooking utensils, a pot and pan , but no cooking utensils. The portable heater blew a fuse early in the morning so I couldn't make breakfast. (Too early in the morning to contact hosts). The first time I contacted host for help with the TV, I could tell the host was clearly annoyed, the second time I contacted host the evening before my departure, I received no response at all. For the price, I believe I would have been much more comfortable at the M.V. Inn.

Response from Jane (Rio) Joel:
The guest never communicated that she had been on the road for many weeks, perhaps months, and in need of a larger kitchen. She had booked our Cottage Studio, not our Carriage House one bedroom apartment, which does have a much larger kitchen which affords the space for more pots, pans, etc. That said, we have never had a guest in over 3 years who has complained about this kitchenette. Odd. It was pretty warm weather when she arrived, and the bed has a European Comforter with Duvet which I spoke with her about. She mentioned that she was traveling with her own comforter. At the end of her stay, I found our duvet which had been taken off the bed and not neatly folded. The sink was left with dirty dishes, silverware, coffee pot dirty, etc. It was quite a mess. As for the torn sheet, it is true that I found a tear in the sheet which is a fine Italian sheet and will tear over time. Not sure if it was there before, but it has been replaced at no charge to the guest. There was no need to use the portable Dyson fan - heater, as the room has a thermostat and a gas fireplace. I was not advised about the fuse blowing until the guest was leaving. In addition, she did not advise me of any of her complaints, say thank you, and she drove off with my key to the unit and never informed me that she did so. I texted her shortly after she drove off at 8:20 am that I was sorry that I didn't see her text the evening before about wanting to run some laundry. She texted back "I'm ok. Thx" Clearly she was not.

We've lived on both coasts (NY and CA) and have been back in the San Francisco area for quite some time now. Mill Valley is a treasure but we love to travel (Europe, Asia and South America) to take in different cultures, meet people, and experience the local food, music, art, architecture and nature. This is a special location from which to explore the trails of Marin County or to drive a short distance to San Francisco, Berkeley or Napa Valley...and if you need suggestions don't hesitate to ask. We are just 100 meters from the Mill Valley Library, Old Mill Park and less than a 5 minute walk to Mill Valley Beer Works (check out the review), Peets, the Depot and entertainment (142 Throckmorton and The Sweetwater).
