Nestled in South Kona coffee country, unit is off beaten track but only 5 min drive to ocean & parks, 10 - 15 mins drive to local stores / restaurants. Swim, snorkel, surf, SUP, kayak, hike, then relax & enjoy view @ minimalist yet charming downstairs unit. Comfortable indoor-outdoor living on huge west-facing lanai. Experience akin to "glamping" - a.k.a "glam camping". Many birds. Sunsets, quiet nights. Great for adventurous, nature-loving types. Short, steep walk up to unit, worthwhile!
Detailed description below. Please read in full, esp. prior to instant booking.
Although your bedroom is "indoors", as is the full bath, the kitchenette and "living room" are set up out on covered lanai. There are screen windows / doors only. Some guests say experience almost like camping, although I would say "glamping" would be the more accurate term because you will not be in a tent our touching the ground and will have all the basic necessities of home at your fingertips.
Space good for guests looking for mostly quieter, nature-oriented experience. Located in Captain Cook, South Kona region. Please note: we are *NOT* in the busier "Kona-town", which is a 20 min drive north of us.
From our experience, guests who have the best experience here are easygoing, independent and adventurous and read ahead so they are fully aware of all disclosures.
Guests are advised to read this description & House Rules IN FULL prior to arrival, to prevent misunderstandings.
Space: 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom with full shower and tub are indoors. The "living room" and kitchenette are "outdoors" because they have no walls - just roof, railing and floor. The lanai is private and surrounded by vegetation on either side with ocean views.
There are two beds, 1 Posturepedic Queen inside bedroom (not currently shown in pic), and 1 Twin futon bed outside on lanai under mosquito net. Yes, if you want to, you can fall asleep listening to the ocean and looking up at moon & stars.
Good spot for nature lovers who appreciate quiet, dark nights and songbirds in the morning. The house is typical Hawaii style, e.g. windows are screens only, no glass. There are curtains for more privacy, but honestly no need.
Amenities - Lil' Hawaiian Getaway offers simple indoor-outdoor living, perfect for the climate. Kitchenette includes full sink, mini-fridge, hot-plate, electric tea kettle and toaster oven. Small fan for warmer days & indoor electric woodstove for cooler nights.
WiFi - access available. Business travelers please note: internet is via our only option, satellite. Can be slow, depending on weather.
Clean & Hygienic - In my opinion, one of the greatest features of the unit is that it is mold-free. Travelers are forewarned that mold is a problem in many homes and hotels in Hawaii. If you are someone with mold sensitivities, you may wish to book a mold-free rental like ours :) Due to being situated at the perfect elevation, the climate is usually dry and breezy. We get rain from time to time, however it is not in excess and thus not as hospitable to mold blooms.
Minimalist Decor - Although the home is modest, we take care to make sure the downstairs apartment is hygienically cleaned for each and every new guest. We ask guests to please be gentle when bringing luggage in and out of unit and take care not to ding or scratch walls, trim, and/or door jambs.
Nice location - it is off beaten track and tucked back, however. Five-minute drive or 20-minute hike down the road to Kealakekua Bay Park.
Home is tucked back on property. You will need to have directions either printed out or saved offline on your phone, and in hand.
Property off main road. Once you arrive and park, guests must walk/hike up partially rocky, partially paved, somewhat steep driveway.
Heads up: it gets very dark at night. There are a few solar lights along the driveway, but you may also wish to bring or borrow a flashlight if you plan to come and go in the evening time.
One more time: Print or save the directions offline (screenshots?) on your phone ahead of time. Cell phones do not always work properly near house.
If you are like 98% of our guests, you will want a rental car. Some super adventurous folks have been on foot or bike though.
a.) We have broadband internet through a satellite connection. Not always the fastest form of internet, depending on the weather (all we could get on our property though)
b.) Landscaping & yard maintenance occurs approximately bi-monthly and includes noisy weed whacking around lanai / property perimeter. The maintenance company does not always notify me in advance so although rare, this could occur during your stay. It would be a good time to go out & explore the area.
c.) Guests must pack out their trash.

You have access to front lanai, which is for your use only and is private. Yard in front of lanai and down driveway is also open to you. The area at back of home where hosts live is private and not open for guests.
Interaction with guests
First things first: WiFi password is in the App under your reservation info.
We take our cues from our guests. We live on the same property as the Lil' Hawaiian Getaway, which is below our house. We drive past your lanai to access our home above, so if we walk by and see you, we'll say "hi". We are always happy to answer questions or provide recommendations in person, via text or through the Guidebook in the AirBnB app.
If you need anything or have any questions during your stay, please let us know. We are here to help. Communication is always open via the AirBnB app or texting. When you arrive, there is a short introduction given about staying at the property without attracting any pests. Otherwise, we do not intrude and respect your privacy.
Other things to note
+ If you love birdwatching, you may want to bring some binoculars. A recent guest suggested I let future guests know. Lots of adorable, sweet little songbirds.
+ Please do not drive up random driveways attempting to find the place, and we prefer you don't ask neighbors for directions. Please simply print the directions or save them offline on your phone via screenshots ahead of time and you will be fine.
+ To be specific, house number *NOT* posted. For some reason, GPS Maps apps will *not* route you to the door. Not only that, cell reception is unreliable around a couple of corners. Written directions very specific, turn by turn, will get you here if you have them accessible to follow.
+ Provide host with your ETA when you have it.
+ Park in lower grassy area and walk up driveway to unit, there is a sign. If we are home when you arrive we are happy to help bring your bags up to the unit upon arrival.
It is a rule to read through these additional house rules in full, especially for instant bookings.
You need to know what to expect. If anything is problematic for you, this may not be a good fit. If you have already booked and have second thoughts after reading the following, let me know ASAP and we can reverse the booking and I will not penalize you.
+ Check-in time after 4 PM unless otherwise notified.
+ Check-out time 10 AM unless otherwise arranged.
+ Take your trash with you when you check out. There are 2 nearby transfer stations, this info will be provided to you upon request or your can look online for "transfer station Captain Cook" for directions.
+ Park in area where sign is posted. Do *Not* drive up close to house. For some, this may present some inconvenience as you will have to walk up to the unit. Be prepared for a hike.
+ Quiet Hours before 8 AM, after 11 pm*.
+ We expect our guests to respect the peace and tranquility of our neighborhood. This is not a party place and we do not condone loud and/or boisterous behavior.
+ This is a "dark" neighborhood, better to see stars. Thus, please turn off all lights when you go to bed. OK to leave night light in bathroom on, rest of lamps and lights need to be switched Off.
+ Do not use services like Btorrent or Utrorrent on this network as Satellite ISP strict, does not allow.
+ Use common sense re: water and wet things - hang out your wet towels and suits over railing on lanai to dry, rather than on the floor inside the unit somewhere, etc.
+ If you consume alcohol, please be a responsible consumer.
+ Pest control & chemicals are used on site. If you have an issue with this, don't book.
+ We do not allow pets of any kind.
+ Smoking is permitted outside only. Smoking is *not* permitted inside the unit, outside on the lanai is fine if you "ash responsibly". There are no ashtrays however, so you will have to use a makeshift one from something disposable. Please dispose of your butts and ash directly into the garbage.
+ Let us know if you need anything at all (soap / shampoo refills, coffee, garbage bags, Paper towels, toilet paper etc.).
+ Follow "Departure" checklist when you check out.
+ Treat our space with care & consideration. Please do not bang or scrape walls brining luggage in and out. We put a great deal of work into providing you with a relaxing, comfortable and clean place to stay. We appreciate guests who are gentle to the walls, trim, pocket doors, etc.
