Bring your luggage in, close the door, and forget you're steps away from the hustle of Portlandia. You'll be right at home in your 952 sq. ft. PRIVATE daylight basement studio in close-in John's Landing. Easily walk/bike to the OHSU Aerial Tram and Orange Max Line/Street Car stop. Access multiple bus routes on Barbur, Corbett, or Macadam. Or take Car2Go--we're in the home zone. Multiple coffee shops, restaurants, trails and sportsbars within blocks of the property. We can't wait to host you!

The space

You'll be staying in our 952 square foot basement daylight studio. Multiple windows and your own secured door ensure ample natural light during the day.

Recently converted and updated from a long-term rental, your unit boasts: a fully furnished kitchen (full size fridge, stove, microwave, coffee pot, pans, plates/bowls/cups, silverware, toaster, and basic spices), bathroom (plush towels, paper products, and hair dryer), dining area (high top table with four chairs expandable to eight), living space (50-inch HD Smart TV, couch with pull out queen size bed, reclining chair, end-tables, and bedroom area (king size bed, closet, iron/ironing board, and cabinet).

The closet across from the stove contains a stackable washer/dryer unit for washing up those dirties after a day exploring the endless trails (which you can access just a short walk from the house). We keep the laundry room stocked with detergent and dryer sheets.

The bathroom has a standard bathtub/shower, sink, toilet and storage shelves.

Guest access

Walk down the driveway and around the house to find your secured access to the unit. You will be given a personalized code to access the keys in time for check in.

Interaction with guests

We love to greet guests personally and offer tips/information/guides. We're also content respecting your privacy. We're a text/call/knock away if you need us!

Other things to note

-Bring your ELECTRIC car! We'll be happy to share our level 2 fast charger with you.
-There are three grocery stores within a couple miles of the house: Fred Meyer (Kroger Inc. Brand), Hyvee (these first two are south on Barbur), and Zupans (a high end organic food chain) is a mile away on the corner of Macadam/Taylor's Ferry.
-Along with the conventional grocery stores, you'll be very close two of the best farmer's markets in the area. The Portland farmer's market is every weekend on the campus of Portland State University, and the Hillsdale market is held behind Wilson High school.
-If you want to get in on Portland's 700+ food carts, you'll have four easy options on this side of the river: there are two separate pods on the South Waterfront (one on the south end, closer to us; and a newer pod by the tram station, which keeps longer hours), you can head to the PSU pod, the Alder pod downtown--it's the largest in town with some 70+ carts, or the Hillsdale pod next to Wilson High School.
-The geography of Portland can be a little confusing. This might help: the Willamette river is the main east/west boundary; Burnside avenue is the north/south border. Portlanders talk a lot about the four quadrants (NW, SW, NE, SE). You may hear talk of "close-in" or "far east/far west" too. The relevant boundaries here are I-205 on the east--everything east of 205 is not "close in." On the west side things get a little interesting because 205 is not a symmetrical loop on both sides of the Willamette. Instead of 205, people seem to think that once you're past the Raleigh Hills neighborhood of Portland and are in Beaverton/Tigard/Tualatin you're "far out." Make of this what you will as long as you can find your way home.

Very accommodating host and convenient location. Just a short walk to a nice cafe and bus routes. Very comfortable bed with thoughtful decor.

This was a wonderful space! Stayed for three nights, and it really was a comfortable little home. It was great having laundry available, the set up to have the large TV pull out towards the bed was great for a rainy Netflix night in. It was spacious, clean and home-y. The only downside was being able to hear upstairs, which made the space feel a little less private, but aside from that was really nice.

First, the space is as fresh and cheerful as the pictures show it to be. And it's also very private if you want it to be. In many daylight basements, some windows face the street. This is not the case with Kundai and Brenda's house--the daylight basement faces their backyard, with big windows and the door facing the backyard, and a few smaller windows along their driveway. Every window has blinds. The backyard is not absolutely private, but Brenda and Kundai were very respectful of the space that they had rented to me, and I never felt encroached upon. The sleeping area has curtains across it, so that it can be made completely private if desired. I am 6'3", and although the ceiling is not a standard 8 feet, it is high enough, and painted brightly enough, that I never felt that it was too low. I didn't have to duck under beams or ducting, and never felt pressed down upon. And the floor space is great. So much bigger and nicer than the standard hotel room. It's a very nice apartment. The word "basement" does not apply in most senses of the word. As for the people, Brenda was very helpful getting me settled in, and Kundai was very helpful at showing me how to connect my laptop to the big TV mounted on the wall. I had a few short conversations with both of them aside from these interactions, and I have to say that they are very likeable, enjoyable people. They do have a small child, which their picture makes clear. I happen to like kids, so the few times I heard their son playing I simply enjoyed the sound of a kid being a kid, but most of the time it was quiet upstairs, as I think everybody is out of the house much of the time. The sounds of family life upstairs never encroached upon my ability to sleep or work. I would enjoy having their family as neighbors, and I would enjoy living in this neighborhood--safe, lively, good restaurants and shopping, close to downtown, close to the river and the river trail, yet relatively quiet given how close it is to everything. It's an urban neighborhood, close to busy streets, but the house is tucked back away from much of the busyness. I almost hate to give such a good review, as I know that it will just make this place harder to book next time, but I really have nothing but good things to say about the space and the hosts. This is a nice place. It certainly worked for me, and I will definitely check to see if this place is available on my next trip to Portland.
