The space

A restored 1880's farmhouse, the inn offers modern comforts yet recalls a simpler time. There are five thoughtfully-appointed guest rooms, each with a queen-size bed and ensuite bathroom. Two rooms are on the ground floor with just a few steps to access, three rooms are up a full flight of stairs. Bathrooms have either a clawfoot tub, or a shower, or a tub/shower combination.

If you'd like to have your choice of available room, find our website to check availability and book online there.

Room amenities include: coffee/tea station; quality linens and towels; individual shampoo, lotion and soap; hair dryer; alarm clock/radio; ceiling and tower fans; individual heat control; room darkening blind; spacious closet; free WIFI (medium speed).

Guests also have use of a rustic cabin lounge, equipped with board games, books, wine glasses, and a real wood-burning stove. Outdoor spaces available for guests include the fire bowl, decks and seating areas, screened gazebo, hiking/snowshoeing trails, and seasonal hot tub (closed in winter). Snowshoes are available for guests to use for free on our private trails.

We are located out in the country and maintain a natural environment as much as possible, especially on the trails -- come see what "a carpet of moss" looks like or help yourself to wild raspberries or blueberries in season. You may see deer, moose, fox, beaver or other wildlife on or near the property. On a clear night, the starry sky is spectacular!

Hot, served breakfast is included with every stay and we take pride in giving you a great start to your day! Be sure to let us know in advance of any allergies or dietary restrictions and we'll do our best to meet your needs. Find our reviews on TripAdvisor to see what our guests have to say about our breakfasts.

Seasonal packages (dog sledding, snowshoeing, waterfalls picnic, Algonquin Park day trips, etc) are listed and described on our website and must be booked directly there.

Guest access

Four of the guest rooms are located in the Coach House building, which is used for guests only. Across the deck is the Main House, where the fifth guest room is located, along with the registration desk, dining room and hosts' quarters.

The guest lounge is located in yet another building, a rustic little cabin set back from the sleeping areas.

The hot tub is on the main deck and is available to guests until 11pm daily from late-spring to mid-autumn (closed during winter months)

Interaction with guests

As innkeepers for over 10 years, we greatly enjoy meeting people from around the corner or around the world, but we respect privacy and personal space. Our aim is to be attentive to your needs without being intrusive.

We greet guests at check-in and serve breakfast every morning and are available then to help with plans for the day or to share maps and tips. We live here and are often available at other times (just pop in to the main house or look for us outside). When our schedules permit and guests are interested, we sometimes pull up a chair at the outdoor fire bowl.

Traveling solo and doing some hiking? Let us know which trails you plan to hit and rest assured we'll keep an eye out for your return.

The neighbourhood

Located 20km north of Huntsville and 7km off of Highway 11, Fern Glen Inn is on 120 acres of forest and meadow. The Park-to-Park Trail borders our property for easy hiking. There are many lakes, rivers, beaches, waterfalls and scenic spots nearby.

Algonquin Park to the east is a popular day trip, especially in the summer and fall. Arrowhead Park, just north of Huntsville, is great for winter activities such as skating on the ice trail, or canoeing in the summer. Parry Sound and Georgian Bay are an hour to the west and make for a good full-day trip for longer stays.

Getting around

As there is no public transportation, a car is needed to visit the inn and explore the area. Rental cars are available in Huntsville.

Other things to note

Access to the inn from the parking lot is up a small hill and up a few steps onto the deck. Three rooms are located up a full flight of stairs. The guest lounge is set further back on the property along a grass pathway of somewhat uneven ground.

Jackie and Jim restored our faith in AirBnB. Lovely folks, great location, superb hosts. Our room was lovely and clean and the entire place was great. We loved The Coop and the gazebo. We will definitely be back for a winter visit. Our breakfast was wonderful, nutritious and filling. Jackie and Jim had great suggestions for visiting the surrounding area including Emsdale and Kearney. Jim made these great paracord bracelets, which we covet. Overall, a fabulous visit. Highly recommended.

Jackie and Jim were very welcoming, accommodating and excellent hosts. The property is beautiful with many things to do in the area. The room was very nice with all amenities and breakfast was bountiful and delicious with individualized attention. We would return and recommend it to others.

Thanks Jackie and Jim for a great B&B experience. It was all smooth and I appreciated Jackie's attentive communications and guidance re: what to expect. The property is beautiful with well-restored period farm buildings that are both beautiful and comfortable. We stayed in the Homestead room (in the main building), and although Jackie warned us that there might be some noise in the morning we didn't notice any. The Coop was also a great place to hangout by an indoor fireplace and meet other guests (of which I was originally apprehensive, but enjoyed). In terms of location, after the major highways expect to drive for about 10-15 minutes on a well-maintained gravel road - not an issue. Finally, the breakfasts were next level - great flavour, variety, portion size and as much coffee as you can handle.

My husband, Jim, and I are escapees from the city. In 2005, we sold our house in Toronto, I walked away from a career in advertising, we said goodbye to all things familiar to buy a bed & breakfast "up north", and we never looked back!

For over 10 years we've been welcoming guests to Fern Glen Inn B&B. We love where we live, we love what we do, and we love meeting all sorts of people and sharing our little patch of the world with them.

When we're not taking care of guests and tending our business, we head outside to play. Hiking in Algonquin Park, swimming in one of the local lakes or rivers, snowshoeing in the winter, training for a run (or in Jim's case, a triathlon). We spend a lot of time taking care of our property but it's a labour of love.

When it comes to travel, we look for action and a bit of adventure, whether it's backcountry camping, snorkeling with sea turtles, or trekking in the Andes.
