Hidden in the mangroves of Bocas del Toro, JINJA ISLAND is a secluded 2.2-acre island with a proper house, electricity, hot water, a flush toilet, cooker, fridge-freezer and hammocks for doing absolutely nothing in.
We’ll even throw in a traditional kayak for exploring the surrounding waters.

The space
Situated at the entrance to Dolphin Bay, Jinja Island is a private, off-grid retreat surrounded by protected mangroves and fringed by its own coral reef. The surrounding waters are home to jellyfish, sea urchins, nurse sharks and a remarkable variety of marine life.
On moonless nights, the water can glow with bioluminescence, creating tiny sparks of light around you as you swim or paddle through the bay.
Although remote and eco-friendly, the island offers plenty of practical comforts. The house has a hot shower, flush toilet, solar power and mains-style AC electricity. Sheets and towels are provided, while the kitchen includes a fridge-freezer, oven, gas stove, pots, pans and cutlery for self-catering.
The island is home to an extraordinary range of tropical wildlife, including golden orb-weaver spiders, hornets, scorpions and occasional snakes. Insects and sand flies are part of life in the rainforest, so guests should bring a good insect repellent and be prepared for a genuinely tropical environment.
You’ll have the house entirely to yourself, with complete freedom to relax and explore the island. Paths and outdoor areas can become muddy after heavy rain, so suitable footwear is recommended.
The island’s caretaker, Ismael, stays nearby in a separate cabaña and is available to offer help, local knowledge or practical assistance whenever needed.
There is no air conditioning, but the house is naturally ventilated and surrounded by the breezes, sights and sounds of the rainforest. Jinja Island is best suited to adventurous guests looking for privacy, nature and an authentic off-grid island experience.

For stays of three nights or more, Ismael will collect you from Bocas Town and take you to Jinja Island free of charge. Return transport may also be available, potentially saving you around $40 in water-taxi fares. Please share your travel plans in advance.
Morning arrivals and departures are strongly recommended, ideally before 10am, as the water can become rougher later in the day.
Jinja Island offers the chance to step away from everyday life and enjoy a proper digital detox. Spend your days relaxing in hammocks beneath the equatorial sun, listening to tropical birds in the trees, swimming in the lagoon and exploring the reef.
After dark, the surrounding water may glow with bioluminescence, sparkling around you as you swim or paddle. Ismael may also be able to lend you his cayuco, a traditional dugout canoe, for exploring the waters around the island.
