“Ilhas” (islands) are a type of construction that appeared in city of Porto in the 19th century and still exist today.
They were the solution found to answer the need for housing, that increased with the migration of workers from the rural space to the industrial city.
“Ilhas” were constructed by the employers and were usually located in the back of the employer’s houses. They are made of rows of 10/12 single-storer houses, with approximately 15m2 are each, placed along a narrow corridor.
This typology appeared due to the kind of land subdivision used by that time. The lot was 25 spans, 5,5 m wide and could reach 100m long. with toilets located at the end of the plot serving all the houses…
The industrialisation of the city led to a demographic growth which in turn led to this kind of housing spreading all over the city, specially near the industries. In the beginning of the 20th century 30% of Oporto’s population was living in “Ilhas”.
The low wages of the workers allowed them to live only in the cheapest types of housing available and those were the “Ilhas”.
My apartments are situated in one of those restored.
You can enjoy all area outdoor, and off course, the apartment you will reserve.
