The house made it through the Cat 5 hurricane Irma. We have damage and can't rent for awhile. We were off island safe. Going back ASAP. Someone is staying there.

The space

Very quiet neighborhood. You will sleep with the tropical sounds of coqui frogs. In the morning you wake to the sounds of banana quit birds.

Guest access

You will have your own bedroom, living area, screened in porch. Kitchenette includes huge farm cast iron farm sink big enough to bathe a baby or your snorkeling gear! Pool access. And a huge assortment of DVDs that include family movies for young children. Lots of open space.

Interaction with guests

We will definitely be around to help. Jeff knows every trail on the island and can assist you in getting reservations for the famous Reef Bay hikes hosted by the national park. We can help you with car rentals, restaurants and activities. We want you to have a fun trip, exploring our magnificent park. We do not want you struggling with the details of travel. Let us help you!

If you want to party this is not for you! If you want to stay in touch with your office all day we aren't the place. If you want to relax, enjoy nature and get to know the beauty of St. John we are definitely the place. Park Place.

Other things to note

We have cats and dogs. Our pets are not allowed in the guest suite.

We live in a quiet neighborhood and ask guests to refrain from loud partying and late night antics. One of the joys of staying here is the calm, the quiet. If you enjoy staying up late we aren't your place!

We are encouraging our guests to enjoy our national park. We ask that guests use coral reef safe sunscreen and avoid toxic products that harm our fragile environment. There are many insect repellents that are safe both for the environment and you!

Bottom line: GET A JEEP. The parking spot/unit aren't easy to get to, unless you have a jeep. We had one, so it wasn't too much of a problem, but if you don't have one - this may not be the easiest place for you to get to. The back porch is not to be missed, and the unit is pleasant - Martha communicates a LOT - so be prepared, but for those who don't mind this - it can be very helpful! Location: We wanted to be in the middle of the island - and so, from here - you're about 20 minutes from everything. It isn't the easiest to find, but once you figure it out (didn't take long) - GPS doesn't necessarily help - it's not too bad. It's quiet, you don't really see the next door neighbors out the back, so it's basically you and the frogs (and a few cats that roam around) The Unit: It has mostly everything you need. There's an AC unit in the kitchen - which is on the other side of the unit from the bedroom - so if you get hot easily - turn it on right when you get into the unit - it's gonna take about an hour or so to cool the place down to sleep. There's a nice breeze - so if you don't overheat easily - you should be fine (I run warm, so the AC was key). There's a loud fan in the bedroom that works well, but drowns out the pleasant sounds of outside. Again - the back porch and view and single-person hammock are awesome. Bathroom was great, and kitchen was workable, but probably not for a long-term stay. Lots of DVDs. Tons of other stuff too for snorkeling, beach, etc - that was all VERY HELPFUL. Also had an extra outdoor shower to help clean everything off too. Didn't touch the pool, but it looked nice. Martha even found a hair dryer for us. Martha and her family are VERY social and will send lots of info. They met us at the car barge and we followed them back to their place. SUPER HELPFUL. If you don't mind some conversation, Martha is always up for it. If you're on the quieter side, let them know.

This was a very safe and a nice place to stay. It provided us with a roof over our head and Martha was helpful in getting us settled in and giving recommendations on places to eat. Things were nice, but we were able to find better values in other rental properties during our stay.

Response from Martha:
We couldn't communicate with you because you had Verizon. We never heard from you and when we sent you directions you didn't read them. We told you To arrive before dark but never heard from you. You did not read our directions we sent you. Your attitude was strange and dismissive. We charge normal rates for this area. You had access to a pool, private parking and a quiet neighborhood. We welcomed you but never heard from you again. We gave you privacy and assumed all was good. We didn't appreciate your departure. You didn't even say good bye or thank you. Be more polite.

We had a great time and our hosts were super informative, knowledgeable, and caring. Martha and Jeff made sure that we were hitting the right beaches and hikes in the island. They were very nice and really caring - made sure we had drinking water, sunscreen, and umbrellas :) She even offered us a free stay since there were lot of protests at JFK the day we were flying. We couldn't have asked for more. Really lucky to have them as our hosts for our stay. I highly recommend this place for anyone visiting the island.

This little retreat is cozy and private; perfectly relaxing outside the hubbub of Cruz Bay. Martha and her family have everything you might need to enjoy what St. John has to offer (i.e., ample beach gear and bug repellent available for use), and they are great tour guides, should you want to get out and about. Suggestion: If you don't have a rental car and/or aren't comfortable with the restaurant prices in Cruz Bay, bring your own dried goods to prepare. You can purchase fresh produce on St. Thomas or St. John. The kitchenette has a variety of appliances, and there is an outdoor grill with gas burner available.

Fantastic central location for exploring the island, great hosts, and a very nicely appointed apartment! It was perfect for what we needed. We loved the sounds of the jungle while we slept, were very comfortable without ac, loved enjoying a movie after sunset, and all the local advice. Top of the list for our next visit to St. John, highly recommended!

We were really happy with our recent stay on St. John with Martha. It was our first time doing Air B&B on this trip and went much smoother than we expected. Martha and family were great. They met us at the dock at Cruz Bay when our car ferry arrived... took us over so we could get some groceries... and then we followed them to the house where we got a great orientation. The property is minutes away from Cruz Bay (where most of the restaurants are) and also maybe 10-15 minutes away from the popular beaches. We appreciated her "local" advice on when it was best to hit the beaches and other areas of Virgin Islands National Park to avoid the cruise and other crowds. It made our visit a lot more enjoyable! We loved the location of the house... you could see the ocean from the back porch area. It's in a jungle basically and you could hear the croaking of the little tree frogs all night long (very peaceful!!!) even with the windows closed... that is one of our favorite memories. The only thing I would do differently is rent a Jeep or a 4x4 vehicle to get around St. John. We rented a car on St. Thomas and got a Toyota Yaris. The roads around St. John (include to the house) are very steep. We made it okay -- but wish we rented something a little more sturdy for the hills. We enjoyed having dinner on our last night with Martha and family and would definitely stay here again the next time we visit St. John. Highly recommended -- 5 stars. And, a decent value considering that there are only a couple of commercial hotels/resorts on St. John and the rest are home rentals and villas that we were way beyond our traveling budget for a quick week get-a-way to get warm. Thanks for your hospitality and nice place to stay.
