Located in the neighborhood of Vedado, heart of the city, just a few steps from Malecón, close to several discos and cultural sites, such as museums and cinemas. It has clear views and a marvelous terrace. Second floor with no elevator.

The space

The house is situated in a quiet and safe neighborhood. The apartment is detached with no adjoining buildings, which makes it more independent, with 4 exterior facades.

Guest access

There is a supermarket very close to the house that offers a range of food and drink, as well as a fresh fruit and vegetable market, currency exchange, restaurants (Paladar), and even closer is the "Fabrica del Arte Cubano", currently one of the most popular centers with visitors. You can walk to the famous Playita 16, very popular with young people, which has a family atmosphere.

Interaction with guests

If you want to travel to other provinces or tourist places in Havana, we are able to organize transportation and accommodation outside the province. We can organize a day trip to Viñales, an experience you'll never forget, as well as a day at Varadero, one of the most famous beaches in the world.

Other things to note

The manager of the house will be ready to deal with anything that may arise. He will give you his telephone number and be available at all times.

Jose's top floor apartment was a phenomenal experience for our travel party of 3 who speak no Spanish. Jose was extremely prompt in responding to any of my questions and requests. Jose does not reside in Cuba but the host family who lives on the first floor and were extremely helpful. Belkis (mom), the administrator is the sweetest lady you'll ever meet. On the first day of our arrival, someone was selling avocado on the street and I wanted to purchase one so I used my hand signals to ask if Belkis had change as the seller had told me it was $5 (now, in the USA, a $5 avocado is not atypical) but I didn't have any change since we just came from the airport and had only big bills. Lo and behold, it was Belkis who gave me 5 pesos to pay for it, NOT 5 CUC's (not a bright moment in my life). Her daughter, Iresis, really helped us enhance our trip and experience life like a local! Prior to our trip, we had hired someone to plan out our itinerary and laid out our day to day and we would not be needing any additional services from the host family - BUT we are so glad Iresis was available to help us navigate Havana and Vedado. We hired Iresis for two days and it was the best thing since sliced bread. Iresis is fluent in English and works as a tour guide (she's an industrial engineer by trade and ex college professor). She took us to Old Havana and gave us an amazing tour and history of Cuba. A pit stop for some cold chocolate milk and chocolates before stopping into a hip spot for lunch! Jose's place is amazing - if you're looking to experience Cuba like a local, this is the spot. Remember that Cuba is still a country in progress and Jose's place has AC in both bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. For three of us, it was ample space without feeling claustrophobic. There was also a washer which is a huge plus for when we went to the beach so we could wash the towels! Iresis made me coffee every morning and we drank all of the beer and water in the fridge, which cost in total about 40 CUC. There was also fresh mango juice upon our arrival! We learned that Jose was the architect and built this house 30 years ago. If we come back to Cuba, we would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful exposure to Cuban culture. The host was extremely knowledgeable and spoke fluent English, she was able to accommodate any requests for excursions or tours which we were interested in. The location is residential and serene, about 10-15 min taxi ride from Old Havana.

Lovely place with lovely people! Our hosts were so dedicated to making our stay as comfortable and welcoming as possible. The location of the apartment was perfect for people looking for a cultural emersion, with a friendly neighborhood and street markets just a few blocks away. We had breakfast at Jose's place every morning, with Ire as our lovely chef. This was extremely convenient and a fulfilling breakfast! Ire shared stories and history with us every morning. We had dinner once and the food was delicious. Ire's uncle is a wonderful chef. Loved our experience!

Where to start?! Staying at Casa 17 is simply one of the best experiences of my life. The house is beyond comfortable, the location is excellent, safe and with a real feel of all the shades Cuba can offer. The expedition organized to Varadero and the visit to old Habana were amazing. By the second day we were talking to locals, buying at the market, using local currency and getting immersed into the day-to-day life there. Both Belkis and Iresis took on our constant questions and interest with kindness, patience and eagerness. By the end of the trip it was like having a second family (cats and dog included) I would definitely not recommend this place to people looking for wild partying; this place is a place to find friends, to learn and to have a real taste of one of the many faces of Cuba. Try Casa 17, it's many street vendors selling fresh bread, ice cream, the local market, the neighbors, the friendly pets greeting you when you come back from a long sunny walk and the smiling, open, warm hearts of Iresis and Belkis. You will not only not regret it, but you will never forget it.

Very friendly and helpful staff! They gave us great information during orientation and answered our many questions daily. The house was clean and beautiful and quiet at night. This apartment is located walking distance from Malecon. Overall, I had a great stay and would recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Cuba!!!

We loved staying in this apartment. It was very spacious, with 5 places to sleep. The home was beautifully decorated and had tons of natural light. Iresis (one of the hosts) was so interesting and charismatic, and we loved talking to her in the morning while we ate the delicious breakfast that they offer for 5 CUC per person. The only difficulty we had was that the apartment is relatively on the outskirts of Vedado, so some walking is required to get to certain main destinations, but with good weather we liked walking and exploring so we really didn't mind that much. We would recommend this home to anyone visiting Havana! It surpassed our expectations and we definitely want to return!

Response from José:

Casa de 17 was lovely. The photos represent it well. The terrace is worth the price of entry. We sat on a Friday morning and drank coffee and listened to a band from the neighborhood practice for the weekend. It was sublime. There was some sort of confusion in (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps about the intersection that cost us some time when we arrived in Havana. It is at the corner of 17 and 28 in Vedado. That is all you have to tell the taxi driver. Jose actually lives in Spain. Iresis lives with her folks on the first floor. They are your actual hosts. They could not be more delightful. Iresis is actually a tour guide. She knows a ton. Her dad works for a transportation company. He took us in his taxi to the airport. He can be super helpful also. Even the family dog, Chocolate, is a delight. In two days, I really felt like the neighbor upstairs. This sense of community was an unexpected charm to our stay in Havana. The Vedado neighborhood is not that close to the touristy sections of old Havana. It is a $10-$15 taxi ride. So if you want to be in the thick of the tourist rush, this is not the place. There are some good places to eat in the neighborhood and in Miramar pretty close but those were taxi rides too. If you want a sense of living in a tree-lined Havana residential neighborhood, this is it.
