Description

The space

Set in a cosy and friendly hamlet, Les Veilles Ecuries (the 'Old Stables') is made up of an old farmhouse, barn, and two gites.

The Farrier's Cottage has a large open plan ground floor living space with a 3x3 fitted kitchen and a 7x4 lounge/dining and a tiled shower room. Upstairs are the three bedrooms and the large bathroom.

The cottage has its own terrace and BBQ and is well furnished and equipped.

Guest access

Guests have access to the majority of the grounds and the swimming pool area. However, the gardens in front of the main farmhouse (on the left hand side of the swimming pool) are for the sole use of the owners.

Interaction with guests

We may be present during your stay, and although we are friendly and can offer recommendations if needed, you can expect to have your privacy respected.

The neighbourhood

We love the this part of the Dordogne because of its beautiful countryside. The Perigord-Limousin natural park with forests, fields, rivers and many lakes and ponds create a wonderful setting. Whilst having easy access to all the wonderful attractions of the Dordogne, it is away from the tourist crowd.

This area is great for cycling and very popular with cyclists, both for mountain bikers and road cyclists. Mountain bikers can enjoy the many kilometres of off-road tracks, passing chateaux, lakes, rivers and fantastic scenery. For the road cyclist, these quiet, undulating roads make road cycling safe and a pleasure to ride, passing through many typical French villages and along lakes and rivers. The views are breathtaking.

The area is perfect for family holidays. There is a large dam in nearby Miallet which is wonderful for walking, with a nature trail with information on flora and fauna, or even off-road cycling, and safe for the children. A little further afield we have a modified disused railway track which again is very popular for families to cycle or walk as it is traffic free.

Although this is a rural location set in a natural park, there are many lakes locally with lovely man-made beaches. Many have diving platforms, canoes, pedaloes, cafes and toilet facilities with life guards during the summer months. The nearest one is just a few minutes away on the outskirts of Saint Saud (our nearest village).

The Perigord is well known for it gastronomy. The many local markets offer a great choice of fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, poultry, fish, cheeses etc.; every day of the week one or more markets are open in the vicinity. There are excellent restaurants nearby, as well as simple bistro style places.

In the gites you will find a folder with information on the local sights and activities including local food markets.

Getting around

Limoges airport, which has daily low-cost flights from/to the UK is only 45 minutes away. Because of its rural setting it is recommended to have a car (car rental is available from Limoges airport). It is about seven hours by road from Calais.

Other things to note

Please ensure that you do not use any glass around the swimming pool. There are plastic cups provided for this use.

We are Jan and Ningsih. After having worked and lived in the far flung corners of the world for the past 30 years, we are now preparing for retirement and realising our dream to settle in France.
We love this particular region of France because of the beautiful landscapes, food and people. We believe that we have found something truly special in Grandcoing and look forward to growing old here.
