The space

“La Torre” is an ancient farmhouse at Massa Lubrense, surrounded by olive and lemon trees, about 300 yards above sea level, facing Capri, the bay of Naples and its other islands. It is today a holiday house for the family of the owners. To the original tower (dating from the early Eighteenth Century) several additions have been made in the centuries, which give it its present shape.

The flat offered to the guests, of about 130 square yards, has been completely refurbished, is wholly independent, and is comprised of three ample bedrooms, two of which with a double bed, and one with twin beds. Each has its own bathroom en suite. There is a spacious sitting room and a kitchen/dining room, ample and well equipped.
The flat develops around the old farm’s courtyard, paved in stone, having at its centre a well with spring water. The courtyard, which is for the guests’ exclusive use, has a nice view of Capri (as indeed the main bedroom), and is equipped with deckchairs and a table for alfresco eating (sits eight comfortably). It enjoys many plants and flowers.

The house is furnished with mostly old furniture which has been there for as long as one can remember, every generation of owners having made their own additions: the house has been in the present owner's family for at least five generations. A little stone coat of arms of the family who originally owned the house hangs on the entrance to the courtyard. Quite a few books, many of which in English, are scattered in the rooms. The main subjects are literature and history.

"La Torre" looks onto a lemon grove and is surrounded by an olive grove, has its own vegetable garden, and a spacious informal garden, where there is a small (10 y. x 5) swimming pool which could be shared with the owners’ family.

The house is reached through about half a mile of a very narrow road which is rather uncomfortable, and unsuitable for large cars. It can otherwise be reached with a five minute walk, leaving the car at a nearby church. A counterpart of this drawback is however the fact that the house enjoys a very quiet setting.

At about three miles there is Sorrento, a very nice old little town, from which ferries to Capri and Naples are available (Capri is at about 6 sea miles, and the fast boats reach it in about 15 minutes; the journey to Naples is about half an hour). The small village of Massa Lubrense is at a distance of less than a mile; it is however more easily reached on foot than by car. In the village there are some interesting buildings, churches and all the shopping facilities.

The area has a wealth of footpaths, some of remarkable beauty, which are very well marked; a map of the footpaths can be obtained at the Tourist Office in Massa. The nearest approach to the sea is from "Marina della Lobra", the old little fishing harbour of Massa Lubrense (about a mile downhill from the village), which is very busy in July and August, but nice and quiet in the rest of the year. Boats for rent are normally available in the harbour. By boat, one can easily and in a very short time reach the very beautiful Amalfi Coast, and Capri of course. The coast in this area is rocky, and there are few beaches. The nearest beach is at "Marina del Cantone" (about 20 minutes by car from the house), which again is very busy in July and August, but nice and quiet at other times. Some of the restaurants on the beach are good. Positano is at about 7 miles; but the journey takes about half an hour because of the winding road. The ancient remains of Pompei can be reached in half an hour from Sorrento by a very convenient and cheap train (there are two trains every hour, which run until 10 or 11 p.m.): alighting at the "Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri" station, one is in front of the main gate to the ancient Pompei. By car one can also reach the top of Vesuvius: about an hour's drive, plus a few hundred yards on a footpath. A walk along the rim of its crater is quite an experience, and in a clear day the views (including those of the ancient Pompei, which was of course destroyed by its lava in 79 A.D.) are most beautiful.
