Email communication was prompt and clear. The host greeted us and made us feel welcome. The home is spotlessly clean and breakfast is generous and good.
We reserved the room for two nights. Unfortunately, during our second day as we were hiking in the national forrest and were without internet service, Hurricane Matthew came barreling toward our home in Hilton Head. When we started driving back to Seneca we received texts and emails advising us that our home area was ordered to evacuate the next day at 3PM. We had to rush back to the Lowry House, gather our belongings and drive into the night to get home and prepare our home for the storm and gather what we wanted to take with us for safe keeping.
David and Billie were not at the house so we sent an email advising them of our situation. Once the evacuation was lifted and we returned home, we asked if they would consider refunding our money for the second night. The house was empty, no other guests, so they did not miss an opportunity to rent the room to another guest.
They declined to refund our money because we left after check out time. They are certainly within their rights to refuse a refund; however, if I were in their position I most definitely would have given at least a partial refund. Alternatively, they could have offered us a free night in the future if we made reservations for two or more nights.
Given the cost of the room, the fact that of four vacant rooms we had the smallest, and their response to our very stressful emergency situation we would seek other lodging in the future.
