Cagliari (Italian pronunciation: [ˈkaʎʎari], Sardinian: Casteddu) is the capital of the island of Sardinia. Cagliari's Sardinian name Casteddu literally means castle. It has about 160,000 inhabitants, or about 400,000 including the outlying townships (metropolitan area).

An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has seen the occupation of several civilisations. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (which in the 1861 became the Kingdom of Italy) from 1324 to 1720 and from 1798 to 1815. Seat of the important University of Cagliari and the Primate Roman Catholic archdiocese of Sardinia, the city is an important regional cultural, educational, political and artistic centre, known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments.

In the past Cagliari was called Krly by the Phoenician-Punic; in Latin was called Caralis.

The Semitic Guglielmo Gesenius derives the name by Kar Baalis, which in Phoenician means "city of God." This derivation was accepted by Giovanni Spano who said that Cagliari is derived from the Phoenician name Kar-El, which also means "city of God."

The root "kar" in the language of the Mediterranean peoples meant "stone/rock" and the suffix "al/ar" gave collective value, so Karalis/Caralis meant "place of the rock community"

During World War II Cagliari was heavily bombed by the Allies in February 1943. In order to escape from the bombardments and the misery of the destroyed town, many people left Cagliari and moved to the country or rural villages, often living with friends and relatives in overcrowded houses. This flight from the town is known as "sfollamento" (deserting)

The Three Star is located just 100 meters from the train station and 100 meters from the bus station every move can be made by public transport or with the help of the taxi.
The harbor is just 300 meters away.
