About this listing
Stay on this lovely individual, comfortable boat in the heart of London and experience the capital from a different point of view.
Jessie is a 57 foot canal boat (or narrowboat) completed in 2011. She is 6 foot 10 inches wide. She can sleep 4 people in comfort, for 2 she is luxurious. The boat has a warm inviting interior and space on deck to sit and watch the world go by. The appropriately named Little Venice (a name coined by the poet Robert Browning) is a very pretty corner of London, famous as home to hundreds of beautiful canal boats and convenient base from which to explore the capital. Two underground stations and good bus routes to all parts of the city are a short walk away. There is something very special about returning to the peace and quiet of the canal after a day in the city. There are lots of local pubs, restaurants, cafe and shops in the immediate neighbourhood.
Free Wifi connection.
The sleeping accommodation is made up of a double cabin at the front with doors to a small but comfortable front deck. There are two single bunk beds to the centre of the boat and a very comfortable sofa which flattens out to a double bed in the living area. Which you choose to use is up to you.
The bathroom has a shower, a fully flushing toilet, and a wash basin with shaving point.
The living area is to the centre of the boat with a solid fuel stove for chilly evenings, a wall mounted digital TV (DVD/CD player). There is a large comfy sofa/bed (storage underneath for bedding). A folding dinning table and additional chairs allows for 6 place setting.
The galley has a gas hob and oven with grill, a good size fridge with freezer compartment, a sink and draining board, cupboards and drawers housing all the usual kitchen equipment.
Water is held in a tank onboard and needs topping up every few days (depending on your usage). This will be done by your host. Hot water is generated from the engine.
In the winter months heating is by the solid fuel stove which burns a combination of smokeless coal and logs which are provided. The stove can be controlled and kept going 24 hours but you need to allow for this in your daily routine....ie loading stove before going out and a little attention on your return. It keeps the boat warm and cosy. An eco fan assists circulation.
Living on board is not quite like a conventional house and needs an understanding and patience with the natural limitations. It may therefore not be for everyone. Power is supplied from Jessie's battery via an inverter which supplies numerous 240 volt power points around the boat. The inverter restricts your use to 1500 watts at one time. Running the engine for a period each day takes care of the batteries and heats the water. Instructions will be given by your host who will be on call should you have a problem.
Smoking is not allowed inside the boat.
The boat is not available for cruising unless by prior arrangement with your host and should be regarded as a static houseboat.
You are asked to behave in a considerate manner to other boat users on the canal with regard to noise especially at night.
How many 5 star hotels have you stayed in? Yes, us too, and now we've added the Jessie as our first "5 star long-boat" stay. This experience, not to be missed, includes quiet (in the middle of London!), endless walks along the peaceful, history-filled British canals, ducks, swans and geese right outside our window, easy access to anywhere, challenging yourself to a different way of living, and best of all, meeting your host Meg.
Meg met us when we arrived and shared with us how to run a long boat (57 feet of boat) which fortunately for us and any other boat in the area we were not allowed to drive. Her knowledge of the area, London in general and the historic canal system used for centuries to transport goods from the north of England into the heart of London.
We loved our stay and look forward to the time we can return.
Myself and my two children spent a glorious weekend on Jessie. The boat is beyond comfortable - it has everything you could possibly need. Generous and luxurious provisions and fresh flowers. A fabulous spot - peace, tranquility and contact with nature whilst slap bang in the centre of city life. We even saw Chris Evans cruising past... Cannot recommend this boat enough.
Living on the canalboat for two weeks was a wonderful experience. It's a quiet part of the city, near two underground stations with shops and food nearby. Meg was very helpful when an issue with the Internet came up. All in all it was a very fun experience.
Boat was lovely, very comfortable and cosy. Meg was very helpful and friendly. Neighbourhood was quiet and peaceful. Highly recommend as an enjoyable unique experience.
Meg was great-she was really friendly; showed us everything we needed to know and left us to it with a contact number in case of emergencies. She had left us with some food and toiletries which we thought was really kind. We had a fantastic weekend-staying on Jessie is really relaxing and cosy and we were very sad to leave. It's a really peaceful location and a unique experience. We will definitely go back - we just got home and are already looking at dates for next year! Thanks Meg.
Meg was very accommodating and communicative. She thoroughly explained the details of life aboard a boat and we had no issues. It was a lovely touch that she provided us with a well stocked fridge, breakfast items and coffee/tea. The boat itself was a wonderful, one-of-a-kind experience and I highly recommend it! It is handsomely decorated and very comfortable. Little Venice is a quiet area of the city and the Jessie is moored conveniently close to both Tube and rail stations. It was so pleasant to look out the windows and see ducks and geese swimming by, or to just watch the other passing boats. We simply loved this accommodation. It is indeed a very special experience.
Such a unique experience staying onboard "Jessie". The boat is beautiful and exactly like the pictures show. Meg replied quickly to all emails, and was helpful in all answering all questions. She even left groceries and toiletries for us to use. We were 4 adults staying there for 3 days, which in fairness was a bit cramped at times. But we made it work, and being in London, we were out and about most of the days. There was a problem with the toilet one of the days, but within hours Meg arrived and fixed it.
About the Host, Meg
I've loved boats and water all my life. I spent long periods living on the south coast gazing at the sea and wishing I could get afloat. It was only when I looked inland to the rivers and fantastic canal system of Britain did it become possible. I have swapped a normal house for two narrowboats. I live aboard one and offer the other JESSIE (named after my late mother) for interested people to stay on while visiting London. I've made the boat as comfortable as possible and love to stay on her myself whenever I can. She has a great central position on the canal at Little Venice and I am never too far away on my other boat if needed. I enjoy sharing the fun of boats.
You'll get a warm welcome on JESSIE.
