The neighbourhood

The Summerhouse is in the idyllic village of Tarrant Hinton in the South West of England with many local picturesque walks and cycling trails.

The village is one of several small communities with a Tarrant name prefix along the seven and a half mile tributury, which runs into the River Stour. As well as Tarrant Hinton, they are Tarrant Gunville, Tarrant Launceston, Tarrant Monkton, Tarrant Rawston, Tarrant Rushton, Tarrant Keyneston and Tarrant Crawford.

The village is close to large towns such as Blandford Forum and Salisbury yet far enough from the madding crowd. It is approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) north-east of Blandford Forum. Wimborne, Dorchester, Bournemouth, Poole and Southampton, as well as the New Forest are within driving distance. As is the Jurassic Coastline, which has the beautiful Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and other beaches close enough to visit.

As well as the Tarrant valley's renowned spectacular scenery and challenging walks. Tarrant Hinton is probably best known as the location of the Great Dorset Steam Fair in August.

Getting around

You do need a car or bike, but there are buses to Blandford and Salisbury, Weymouth. There are bikes to ride but you need to bring your own protective headgear etc. Please note these are ridden at your own risk.

Other things to note

The summerhouse is a delightful fully insulated 50 year old wooden cabin which stands within the two acre garden of a traditional Dorset thatched cottage, overlooking the village church dedicated to St. Mary, which is medieval and dates from the 1200's, with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The summerhouse is a distinctive cabin sleeping up to 4 people in comfortable self catering accommodation.

The owners are Carol and Stuart. Carol is a potter and ceramics tutor, and as well as creating her own work, teaching in her studio in the garden. Stuart is a Head Gardener and has shaped and maintained the gardens to enhance the site.

The summerhouse is used to accommodate residential potters, but the owners are happy to invite anyone to come and stay with them whether or not they want to pot or not. The choice is yours. If you want to experience one-to-one tuition contact Carol for dates. Visit Cedar pottery website (URL HIDDEN)

A wonderfully peaceful weekend in The Summerhouse, a special place in a beautiful location. Carol and Stuart are perfect hosts who went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The Summerhouse is set in an enormous back garden, surrounded by fields. It is the ideal retreat after a busy day enjoying in the countryside. The cottage itself is warm and cosy with everything you could need (including home made bread!). Thanks to Carol and Stuart.

Response from Carol:
It was lovely to have you stay with us Claire - Buddy was so good and we hoped he enjoyed himself too. Thank you for looking after The Summerhouse - just one question how did you eat dry bread! Butter not used!! Carol

We had a fabulous time staying in the summerhouse. The facilities were perfect and Carol was a perfect host. Ensuring we had everything we needed, even waterproof coats for the kids when we forgot to pack ours! The summerhouse was very well equipped, the beds were so comfortable. We will definitely be coming back, especially to try the homemade marmalade!

Relaxation personified. My wife and our three boys stayed here, knowing that it'd be a tight squeeze we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of room we had. The bedroom is decorated beautifully, the bed is extremely comfortable and the all round summer house is stunning. Set on a lovely farm in rural Dorset you have chickens and a lovely view of a gorgeous field to wake up to. Carol supplied eggs, jam, butter and milk which was a lovely touch but we didn't need to bring much as there was so much already there! Dogs loved it too and the garden is secure if your dog is likely to perform a Houdini escape like ours! Carol and Stuart are lovely, friendly hosts and will always be on hand should you need them but will also leave you to do your own thing too. My wife and I will definitely be returning to this lovely venue! Thanks for having us! The Graves x

Carol was a fantastic host - nothing was too much bother. Made the whole family welcome - my 1 year old and 5 year old loved the pottery experience and even our old dog felt right at home. Cosy with beautiful views - we had a lovely weekend break - perfect location for our 9th (pottery) wedding anniversary. Would recommend thank you

A lovely picturesque cosy summerhouse, perfect for a weekend away. Carol was a great friendly host - very accommodating and provides lovely personal touches such as home made marmalade, bread and fresh chickens eggs! Carol also has a pottery studio at the location and was kind (and patient!) enough to tutor us. This was great way to spend a couple of hours, trying something new and making our own creations. Definitely recommended.

We moved to Tarrant Hinton village in 2012 from Berkshire. We love it down here in Dorset as it is so lovely and peaceful, especially looking out over the fantastic views. Stuart has landscaped the garden with wildlife in mind and it is an oasis of calm, even for our free range chickens

Carol is passionate about pottery and teaching this art/craft in her studio to whoever wants to have a go. We both love the country style living and want to give you a good stay. We hope you will want to experience the pottery studio and the beauty that Dorset can provide, but the summerhouse accommodation is a beautiful space to stay whether you indulge in the clay or just want to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
