Near I-280 and convenient to San Francisco or Silicon Valley, but you'll feel far away in the woods.
Your room has big windows and plenty of space for a queen-size bed with a great, new mattress, a large hardwood desk, and room in the closet. It is naturally cool in the summer. With a private entrance and bath, the space feels a bit like your own suite.
Enjoy the outdoor setting and two decks overlooking a lake and the SF Bay with an alternate workspace, BBQ/fireplace, and a large spa.
The house, dating from the 1920s is full of character and originally served as a summer home for residents of San Francisco. Although you can now make the trip much more efficiently, it still has a hunting-cabin feel. The property is full of oak, redwood, and cedar and we share it with local deer.
Stretch out and soak in a large hot tub under the protective canopy of a huge Deodar cedar tree to the tune of chirping crickets. You may be tired after a day in the city or one hiking in nearby Edgewood Park. Or, if necessary, plug in your laptop, kick up your legs, and work from one of our wine-barrel Adirondack chairs. Either way, enjoy surrounding views of the SF Bay, Mount Diablo, and Lower Emerald Lake. On occasional weekends, you may be able to listen in on a music concert from the lake, only a hundred yards or so away.
Make the most of the fresh air, cooking outdoors on a wood BBQ or just enjoy the contained fireplace, also overlooking the SF Bay.
Watch DVDs with surround-sound on a large projection screen in the den, just outside your room.
When ready to retire, sleep well on your queen-size bed, with a new pillow-top mattress over a wood-slat platform. Your room in the downstairs of the house is naturally moderate in temperature -- cool in the summer. Peer out through the trees at the lake below. Wifi and ethernet access are available from your room.
Come and go via your private entrance whenever you like, and take advantage of the shower or tub in your private bath.
Guests are welcome to use both decks, kitchen facilities, the washer/dryer, the dining room, and the den area outside your room with the DVD home theater. Deck accessible from dining area has wine-barrel furniture (two Adirondack chairs with ottomans, a bench, and a snack table) and a large spa.
Guests will have exclusive access to your bedroom, your bathroom, and outside access (via common den and storage area).
Parking is available.
Interaction with guests
I will be staying in the house and available to offer assistance throughout your stay.
Other things to note
In addition to the bed in the private room, there are pull-out sofabeds in the den and living room that can accommodate an additional 2-3 guests.
Cell phone service here can sometimes be a bit flaky. AT&T works pretty well.
The house is set back from the road on a hillside, accessible by stairs (thus not wheel-chair friendly). This and the 1/2 acre lot size, twice the standard for the area, make it extra quiet.
This is a house in the woods. If you stay for several days, you may well see a spider. You are unlikely to see any insects, but that is possible (part of being in nature). To reduce the likelihood, please keep your private entrance door closed when not in use.
There is no TV in your room (or anywhere in the house!)
No loud music or noise that could disturb neighbors.
Please avoid wearing shoes in the house (slippers are available).
No running or jumping on any deck (or in the house).
We take great care of everything here -- treat it as if it were your own.
When using the hot tub:
1) Tub takes time to heat up, so set heater an hour in advance
2) Sweep needles and dirt off of hot tub cover before removing
3) Turn off and replace cover when done
When using outdoor grill/fireplace:
1) Do not move from current location
2) Attend to fire at all times, with filled water bucket nearby
3) Drench completely after use
