About this listing

Our house is spacious and inside the 'bush' style enhances your Africa feeling. Yet, life in Africa is on the veranda.
No dry bush here, but old trees. Our house and garden are a haven of peace and privacy, only to be disturbed by visiting animals and birds. Luxury in the bush. We recommend a longer stay to enhance sightings and complete relaxation.
The combination of proximity to the river (2mins walk) and to Kruger entrance gate is quite exceptional.
Wifi possible on demand.

The space

'Rafiki' means friend and we welcome you in our home as friends.
Our house has 4 bedrooms and three bathrooms (all with AC; all rooms also have ceiling fans), a living room downstairs (with AC) and a video lounge upstairs (with fan), a dining space and a fully equipped kitchen.
All rooms have at least one window that is mosquito and baboon proof when left open. This is rare in Marloth Park but we consider fresh air essential in this climate.
However, in South Africa, people live outside : we have two large covered game viewing decks, a splash pool, a rock pool, a boma (=BBQ place) and best of all a very large garden with impressive large trees. This and the location is what makes our place unique. Our trump card is the combination of closeness to the river (2mins walk) and closeness to Kruger entrance gate (12 mins; from some houses it can be up to 25 mins' drive more).
Our garden also is a birds’ paradise.
We also have developed a game for safari novices and more experienced safari goers. This game is played outside and should provide all the information you need about the nature environment, the animals and safari.
We have a borehole, so if there is no water from municipality (drought, pumps broken), we always have water.

Guest access

Animals roam freely within the park (and occasionnally in and out from Kruger). Our garden has no fences. Safari in your garden and at your doorstep : zebra, kudu, gnoe, baboons and monkeys, and so much more. Potentially dangerous animals (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, …) can be seen at Crocodile River at 2mins walk from the house.
One can hear the lion roar, the hippo snort and the elephants trumpet. The bush sounds are thrilling for nature lovers and it is a challenge to go and check if you hear for example a buffalo's alarm call. Maybe you are lucky and can watch a kill.

Interaction with guests

The owners do not live there but will be happy to help you, give advice or solve problems. Betty will come and clean at 10 euro per day and is also there to help and solve problems. She can even cook for you.
Wifi can be arranged. The guest pays the owner a prepaid sum according to how much he wants to use and that will be available. There also is wifi in the restaurants in the vicinity.

Other things to note

Daily full cleaning at 10 euro a day.
Wifi possible on demand, about 10 euro for 1 Gb, which can last for about 5 days.
Security system. Everywhere AC. Night spot light.
Accommodation prices are way lower than what one pays for Kruger National Park accommodation where much less comfort is offered and where fences prevent animals from coming to the camp.
We have been going to Kruger for over 30 years and stayed in most camps. The choice of our house has been based on everything we know about the bush and animals. Now, seeing the difference, we only stay in Kruger if we want to go to the north, which is less crowded by tourists but also much less animals are to be seen there.

We live in a wildlife sanctuary where animals roam freely. Our garden has no fences. Littering is utterly prohibited (no cigarette buts, no beer caps.)
Strict no smoking policy in the house.
Never forget that the animals coming to the garden are wild animals. Treat them as such. They are scared away by sudden movements or sudden noises. For the night animals, flash lights and normal talking presents no problem.
No yelling or other loud noises.
Children are allowed but they should be under supervision of the adults (no playing around the little fish pond, correct behaviour with animals, respect for everything in and around the house).

Lovely homely house close to river and very peaceful surrounds. Easy to get to Kruger park and lovely sundowner spots on the river. Enough places to eat close by but don't eat out late as they close early. A refreshing pool to cool off in and comfortable rooms.

We stayed here for 4 days and had a lovely time, it's in a great location and about 15 min to Crocodile Bridge gate. We however were greeted with a welcome note that wasn't addressed for us, but for a couple. So with the mix up of who was arriving we were a party of 9 guests when the house was only made up for 2. Therefore we had to make all the extra beds and ask for bedding and towels, the helper whom lives on the property looked confused when we requested this. However we enjoyed our time here. I would suggest that you bring all the staple items you would need to cook, as there is nothing in the house. (No salt, pepper, coffee ect) but overall a nice big house for a nice relaxing getaway near the Kruger Park.

Response from Gerda:
The welcome note was indeed for a couple and not for your party. However, it is not honest that you lie about the rest. You led me to believe that the beds were made for only that couple (and this only after I wrote to you as I often do asking whether all was fine). However, the truth is very different. You had told me on airbnb that there would be 7 guests and a baby and therefore 4 bedrooms and a cod were prepared with towels and everything (so, not just for two which I found strange anyway because we do not leave any beds unmade, it is not a nice sight). However, when you arrived you asked the helper to give sheets for the sleepercouch as you were now 10 guests. You did NOT put the sheets yourself on that sleeper couch, she would never let a guest do that unless you kept her from preparing that couch. Upon her confusion you have told her that you would still inform me about the extra guests which you not only never did, but you give a false story. I am now confused as to why you do this. I have written that in the personal note to you on airbnb but did not think that you would go that far in writing a public lie and blaming others for your actions (same with the Pyrex dish you broke). There is indeed no food as it is a self catering and when I travel in SA and will cook, I have my box with pepper, salt, oil and everything with me. That is normal. I must admit that in the beginning all that was in the kitchen: coffee, tea, pepper, salt, oil and other spices but it is either taken along by guests or I am not there to fill it up and that is not possible when guests expect it. So, you were the very first guest who did not have spices in the kitchen. I will now give a box to the helper who can lend it upon request. As for the non smoking policy in the house, we did not appreciate that it was not respected. You broke two green chairs. You broke one and complained they were not solid enough. They can indeed only take 100 kilo. There are 18 other solid chairs (and more iron chairs). yet, you broke another green one and sent me the picture. Was this for fun?

We had friendly exchanges before our stay and everything was explained very clearly. The place is beautiful and game visits the garden frequently. Which we all found very exciting especially our little grandaughter. The fact that you can walk to the Crocodile river and watch game in the Park is an added bonus. Great place and great stay!

We spent three days at Rafiki's. The location is great. It is only a minute drive to the entrance to Marloth, and a 3 minute walk to views of the River. We spent every afternoon after a nice day in Kruger Park relaxing in the Rock pool. Very refreshing. The house was clean and in good shape. The master bedroom has A/C as does the living room space downstairs. The other 3 bedrooms have ceiling fans. During the summer months the other bedrooms get quite warm. Currently there is a drought in the area, so the property is not as lush as it might have been. Hopefully late rains will bring back the grass. Gerda was very responsive and gave us everything we needed to find the property and to get the keys.

Response from Gerda:
Thank you for the review. We are glad that you seemed to like the location and the property. However, we never claimed that there was AC everywhere. We now have explicitly stated that only ceiling fans are everywhere and AC in one bedroom and the living room. We have known the worst drought since rain is measured and it has been forbidden for over half a year to water the garden or plants. We respect that and will not put people or animals without water (which has happened) because we like a lawn. Marloth park is a nature conservancy. One should be glad that one HAS water as for nearly a week, many homes and tourist places had not a drop during the peak holiday season at Christmas. Thanks to our low location, we have never been in such a situation but we do not take advantage by watering the garden.
