About this listing

The Stonehouse has love in the walls, having been hand built by our Dad, over 15 years. Panelled with old wooden doors, heated by an open fire, a short walk to the beach. A place to calm down and reconnect, beloved by adults and children alike.

The space

The Stonehouse is our family home, and is handmade throughout, and is often described as a cross between a treehouse and a boat.... The house has an upstairs living space with compact but well equipped kitchen (dishwasher, magimix, electric oven and hob, good range of herbs and spices etc) at one end, and an open fire place at the other. Downstairs there is double bed under the stairs which is open to the rest of the house, a separate twin room, and hand made bunk beds (only suitable for people under 5' 4 - will be made up with sleeping bags if requested!). The other beds are in cabins in the garden. The top cabin is hand made of wood, and has a double bed and beautiful windows and is about 5 meters from the front door and the bathroom in the house. The bottom cabin is more substantial, contains a double bed, a desk for writing, and french doors opening onto a wooden deck - it is however about 25 meters from the main house and the bathroom. The bathroom has a large corner bath (fits two people!) and a basin, and there is a separate loo - there is no shower. The hot water is heated by an emersion heater, and as such will do one good hot bath every hour and a half, so sharing baths or staggering baths is a necessary part of life if there are a few of you...!

The garden contains swings, a greek theatre , a pond (not great if you have small children) and an outdoor table under a Ginko tree for al fresco dining. The beach is a short walk away and we have a good stock of picnic baskets and blankets, plates and cutlery, and buckets and spades. There is an arts and craft cupboard, toys for younger children and LOTS of board games and puzzles. There are wellie boots and slippers available to borrow.

There is no television. There is a phone line and wifi internet access.

Sheets are provided but you will need to bring your own towels for the house and the beach!

All our electricity comes from renewable sources, and the main heat source is the upstairs fire and the log baskets will be full on your arrival. The log store is not far from the front door. There are oil filed plug in radiators in each of the bedrooms, and there are electric blankets on most of the beds, and some hot water bottles.

Guest access

Access to the whole house and garden except an attic space and a tool shed which is not included in the let.

Interaction with guests

We will not be present during your stay, but local friends will show you around on arrival and will be on hand if you should need anything.

Other things to note

The house can get cold, so outside of the summer months jumpers and a positive attitude to the cold is important! It does warm up but the open fire is the only heating source apart from plug in radiators.

The house is much beloved by children, but there are unprotected stairs, an open pond and steep banks so it is not suitable for toddlers or very young children without close supervision.

1 or 2 dogs are welcome, if you let us know about them, but the garden is not completely enclosed, so again they need supervision.

We loved our stay at The Stonehouse. The house is exciting, quirky and full of character, but also comfortable and well equipped. The garden is large, very private, well looked after, with plenty to keep the children interested (a lovely high swing, a rope swing, a 'Greek theatre' area, croquet, other ball games and quirky statues dotted all around). Eight of us stayed for two nights and no-one was ready to leave at the end! The house is fairly compact but feels homely. The living / dining room and kitchen area upstairs are all wood-panelled and look out over the garden - it's a beautiful, homely, light-filled space, full of books, jigsaw puzzles and board games. The two rooms outside the main house worked well for our group - they're both simple but comfortable and gave the teenagers their own space. Hosts Charity and Tor couldn't have been more helpful. Beforehand they sent useful, detailed instructions about the house, along with suggested walks, beach visits etc. Their notes end with this lovely quote from their grandfather, who built The Stonehouse: ‘Have the happiest possible time. It is a place of great peace, wonderful for children, and has brought four generations of our family enormous happiness. We hope it will bring you the same.’ Thank you, it certainly did.

Great place to stay for exploring the island, or just to soak up the atmosphere of the house itself - very calming/relaxing place to stay. The Stone House has everything you need and is perfect to get away from the daily grind of life!

We had a really nice stay there, the only negative point is that the bath has no shower head, so when you're 8 people in there and some need to wash their hair it's a bit difficult. Otherwise it is a really nice house with a really nice ambiance and really close to the sea. Unfortunately we stayed only 3 nights.

We had a great time at the Stone House. The house is beautiful and peaceful, it is the perfect place for nature lovers. Tor, Charity, and Charlotte have been absolutely lovely and helpful. The house is rustic but very clean and in very good condition, and the best thing are the good loving vibes from the house. There is a beautiful sand beach located very close to the house. If you like 5 stars hotels I would not recommend this place, but if you like to spend time in the nature, this would be the perfect house for a long weekend or holiday. Thank you, Tor and Charity, we'd love to come back!

The Stonehouse is a magical place in a beautiful location. The garden - esp the swing - was adored by our children! The house is very rustic so if you are a fan of luxury then this is not the place for you, but it is a calm, quiet and restful place.

We had a great time here. Loved the rustic house and the simplicity of the environment. The beach is only a 5 minute walk away and the garden is absolutely beautiful. An ideal place to escape to and get away from it all.

It's really beautiful. But if there is a shower, it will be better. Actually there is a bath in the bathroom. The location is good, near the beach.
