The space

Looking for a home away from home? Come sip your morning coffee on the brand new redwood deck, as you watch joggers, gulls and morning sun reflecting off the lake , and then return at the end of your day to sip your some wine and enjoy your unobstructed view of the sunset.

Our home is warm and friendly with lots of light and style, fully utilizing the 1100 square feet. The interior has been recently updated with fresh paint throughout and new flooring in the dining room. The apartment is on the top floor of a one of a kind, 8 unit building. The ceilings are high, the rooms are spacious. It has a sunken living room (3 steps) that separates the common spaces from the sleeping areas. The apartment spans the entire building, with west, east and northern exposures and offers priceless views with almost total privacy.

Our apartment is furnished with an eclectic mix of things we picked up from our travels around the world, paintings and original photographs that add color and magic. We invite you to kick back and enjoy yourself. The apartment is very spacious, with 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, a sun room with two walls of windows on the Lake, a nice sized, sunken living room, dining, and kitchen area. We're on the top (third floor ) of an eight unit building and there is an elevator for your convenience.

Master bedroom, has a queen size bed and comes with a desk, and an en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom has a double bed, wonderful garden view and a bathroom just outside the door.

Guest access

Guests are welcome to use the entire space. A coin-operated washer and dryer are in the basement of the building, and available for your use.

Interaction with guests

It's important to us that you feel comfortable, and have your own privacy. We will be available for any logistical questions as well as questions regarding fun things to do around the Bay Area.

We'll most likely be out of town since we are renting out our home. We hope to be able to meet with you before heading out, or will leave instructions on your arrival. Either way, we'll be sure to communicate effectively to make sure we're all on the same page.

Other things to note

We have prepared a wonderful written guide for you that explains the ins and outs of our home. It also contains descriptions of lots of things to do in the neighborhood and in the area and how to get around.

As for the nitty gritty details, here's a list. (I love lists!)
• You'll be getting a set of keys, and there is also a call box to the apartment from the front door.
• Internet is available. We have basic cable T.V and you are welcome to watch Netflix, Amazon and other channels through Roku.a
• Please feel free to use the kitchen! Just leave it the way you found it. We love knowing our guests are breaking bread together!

Well, that's all we can think of telling you… Other than we are looking forward to possibly hosting you, and in case we don't answer your questions in the following sections, please feel free to contact us. We will try to respond as quickly as we can, since we know you want to nail down your accommodations quickly.

Sounds great, what's the catch?
So, in all honesty here's a few things to keep in mind… Just so that you're not surprised or feel there was the 'ol bait and switch…
• We live in an apartment building, in a city, which means you'll be able to hear normal city noises.
• We have a lot of breakable things in our house, so the apartment isn't too suitable for young kids, although we can always talk about it.
• We want to be good neighbors, which means we can't support loud guests /parties/activities that will disturb the peace in the building.
The carpets are clean but old and stained.
Sorry no parking on the premises.

We enjoyed our stay. The apartment was well equipped and comfortable with an amazing view of Lake Merritt, and the patio & plants were great. Communication with Laura was easy; we never met but her neighbor was very nice and let us in when we arrived.

This is my second time staying at this place and I was very surprised by the last review so I was a bit hesitant about staying there again. However, I decided to try it out. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The home was neat, clean and well appointed. The dining room had a beautiful new wooden floor, a new deck had recently been installed, offering a wonderful, tranquil view of Lake Merrit and the fact the deck had an array of plants along the railing added to the charm. I found the kitchen and dining room more than adequate. The bedrooms, while not spacious, were large enough and cozy with views of green leafy follage and a giant redwood in the back. The larger bed room had its own bathroom and a half shower with plenty of water pressure. The toilet was a bit old fashioned and one had to hold the handle down until the flush was well under way. The slightly smaller bedroom was adjacent to a much larger bathroom complete with tub and shower. Overall great experience thumbs up and I will be back again!

We had a bad experience overall. First of all, Laura is really nice when you talk to her. Her neighbor Olga (who is very friendly and nice) gave us the keys, although we had to drive to SF to get the keys during the day, so we could have access to the apartment before nighttime. When we got there, we were shocked because the photos in the Airbnb page have nothing to do with the real thing. The apartment was still dirty and messy. We found the cleaning ladies doing their work, so we had to leave the apartment in order for it to be clean as soon as possible since we just wanted to rest after a long trip. Once we got back (after the cleaning), we still found an awful smell and basically everything was dirty. The whole apartment is a mess: it has a lot of spiderwebs, the carpet looks really unhygienic and dirty, the fridge had old and smelly food, it has medicine boxes spread all over the house. Every morning we were waken up by lots of pigeons making loud noises, apparently there is a pigeon plague in the building and they don't have the courtesy of mentioning it at the Airbnb page. Really disappointing and annoying. The place has two "complete" bathrooms, but the water pressure in one of the showers doesn't work: you only get a drop of water so it's impossible to take a shower there. We were five people, and we could only use one shower (that ruined half of our day and made us loose a lot of time). In the kitchen, we only used the coffee machine. It had the glass container partially broken, so the first morning we used it it broke completely. We bought a new coffee machine to replace the old one, and left a note saying sorry and explaining, although it wasn't really our fault. One week after we left, she sent a request for paying $110 for replacing a garbage bin. She assumed that we broke it, but it was broken from the moment we got there. We didn't write to Laura about the broken garbage bin because the whole apartment was a mess, and we would've had to write about a thousand things (shower, spiderwebs, poorly operating door, garbage bin, unhygienic and dirty carpet, pigeon plague, really dirty and smelly fridge, etc.). We are really shocked she's trying to make us pay for something she doesn't even know what happened (because she is in another country). It was the first time my parents used AirBnB and they swear they'll never use it again because of this bad experience. For me, this has been the only bad experience with AirBnB, but it was awful. Laura’s place has one good thing: location! Probably the only thing that kept us there during our stay at Oakland. It has a great view from the terrace. Still, I would definitely not recommend it at all.

Response from Laura:
We were so very sorry –and surprised - to hear about Mariel's family's ‘bad’ experience in our home-especially since she wrote us such a lovely note about what a nice time they had here and how she’d like to meet us sometime. It seems that her opinion changed when we asked her about the broken garbage can. As can be seen from prior reviews, no one else reported any of the problems she said she encountered. We always respect our guests and do our best to provide a clean, safe and relaxing environment.

The location for Laura's condo was the best. it was so lovely to look out on the lake any time of day but especially nice in AM with coffee or evening with wine. Also walking around the lake was a nice experience and a good walk with pretty views. Laura's photography of the lake was just wonderful. The condo was homey and we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable.

We were made welcome from the very beginning. A friendly neighbor had the key and gave us the code to the garage. Cookies and an information sheet were left on a table. The place was clean and very comfortable with a beautiful view. Shopping for basics and good restaurants were easily walkable.

What a perfect place! The view and the location are spectacular, it's easy to get out and enjoy Oakland, and the place itself is well appointed for spending a lovely inside retreat. I'd come back with a stack of books and my binoculars so I can enjoy sunsets and birds and a quiet getaway; and then I'd go out to a yummy dinner somewhere nearby.
