The space

The Cowbarn
This imaginatively converted cow barn, built in 1800, has a spacious, beamed living/dining room with an impressive four-sided glass open log fire. Two steps (at either end of the property; it is worthy of mention that there is no hand rail, due to listed building restrictions) lead up to a cosy sitting room with electric ‘wood burner', Freesat TV with DVD player and radio/cassette player or, at the other end, to the entrance hall area. There is a wealth of exposed Cornish stone walls, open beams, granite and brick arches, wooden floors and glass floor panels showing original cobbles. An open-plan, spacious farmhouse-style, well-equipped kitchen has a gas range with electric twin ovens, microwave, dishwasher, fridge with small freezer, slate work surfaces and tiled floor. Utility room with large washing machine and tumble drier and large cloakroom/ boot room. There is also a separate WC. On this level (up three steps) there is Bedroom 1 a double bedroom with 6ft zip & link bed, TV; en-suite bathroom with shower attachment, separate spacious shower, two basins, WC and two heated towel rails. On the first floor: Bedroom 2 a double bedroom with 6ft zip & link bed, TV; en-suite shower room with WC and heated towel rail. Bedroom 3 a double bedroom with 6ft zip & link bed, TV; 'Jack and Jill' style en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower, two basins, WC and two heated towel rails, shared with the Bedroom 4 a double bedroom with TV.

I am writing this for Americans who have not traveled to the U.K. previously. In America, it is very easy to get around, and one or two miles is certainly no big deal to drive or walk. However, it is different in Cornwall. I would not recommend walking on the narrow roads with curves and large walls on both sides. So, you need to have transportation lined up before coming to this beautiful, rural spot in Lostwithiel. It is gorgeous and serene, and I would definitely visit again, but you need to be aware of the distance from civilization and plan to have transportation. This house is rustic and charming and has a rich history. It is nestled in a gorgeous setting, and it was everything I hoped for aesthetically. The stairs were a bit precarious for us with older ones in our party, so take that into account when booking. We made our older ones promise that they would wait for us before trying to come down the small stairs with no handrail. Communication with Karen was excellent, and she was ready to answer any questions. She handled everything in a professional manner. If you are looking for a "true feeling" of Cornwall along with tranquility, this is an excellent choice.

We booked this accommodation 6 months before our holiday. We made the choice based on the location as well as reviews saying it was suitable for more than one family, children and pets. However when we arrived it had been double booked for the whole period of our holiday!!! The other party had arrived 2 hours prior to us and were let into the accommodation without checking who they were. David explained later how this had happened, I won’t go into details. The other group, who had booked less than 2 months before the holiday (we were told) and were already in the house when we arrived were allowed to remain there so we found ourselves having to find alternative accommodation that evening for 9 people (including a 1 year old an a 7 year old) + 2 pet parrots in peak August season in Cornwall… To cut a long story short David paid for 3 hotel rooms at Fowey Hotel that night for 5 of us that were already in Cornwall and the other 4 returned back home to London as they’d just left. We tried in vain to find something suitable for our complex group that evening. David helped us next morning to find 2 caravans in a caravan park nearby… Together they cost £550 more than the Cow Barn. David was helpful and told us he paid out of his own money the hotel for 1 night. Karen was rather invisible and sent us a text saying she was "dreadfully sorry” and that "The people in the Cow Barn, should have been asked to leave, but that was out of my hands.” We have not heard from her after this. Airbnb contacted us immediately after the host cancelled the booking. They offered £165 to go towards booking another accommodation but when we explained that the only thing we could find was more expensive than that, they told us this was the maximum they could offer. Had WE cancelled the booking that evening we would have lost all the money (£1660) but it seems that the host did not have the responsibility to accommodate us once they cancelled after we’d arrived! We stayed in much worse conditions than at the Cow Barn and paid more as we had to find something on the spot. I understand mistakes do happen and I guess the hosts have learned from this experience. However I don’t think it’s fair to only offer 10% of the booking price to go towards finding another accommodation when we are talking about August, Cornwall, 9 people with children and pets + having to find accommodation for that very same day. All the other accommodations we have been able to consider that day were way more expensive (at least £1000 more). So we are bruised by the experience and more than £350 short of money that neither the host nor Airbnb have agreed to pay back to us. On the other hand we only had 1 day...

The Cow Barn is wonderful. We went with two other couples and it was perfect as we all had our own ensuite bathrooms. The living space couldn't be better for a sociable get together as it's all open plan. The photos don't do the interior justice. Fab barn. Very peaceful outside and we were made to feel very welcome.

We had a very enjoyable holiday and the cottage was a major factor. It was extremely well equipped and the adjoining field and surrounding areas presented us with good exercise options for our three dogs. We will more than likely return next year.

We absolutely loved our time at the Cow Barn; fantastic place, secluded location and wonderful hosts. The photographs don't do it justice! Karen was really helpful and a wonderful communicator; David was very interesting and also really helpful and welcoming. The place is magical and very convenient for the Eden Project - to name but one of the many delights in this part of the world. We would love to come again one day. Thank you!

The house was lovely. We were greeted by David within minutes of arriving. He gave us a quick run down of what was what and we were off. The house kitchen has all the implements needed to cook, plenty of crockery etc. The setting is beautiful, peaceful and secluded and only a few minutes drive to the local village which has some gorgeous shops. It's well placed for accessing anywhere in Cornwall but has a lot to offer in Fowey and the surrounding area. We had a fabulous holiday experience. From booking with Karen who answers all questions speedily and accurately through the 2 weeks (which was blessed with great weather!) David was on hand to deal with any questions etc and was a fabulous host. Thank you all. We had a fantastic holiday.

Karen User ProfileKaren is a superhost.

I'm currently "between jobs " after 15 years running my family business, I'm a wife to Steve and a mum to our 19 year old son, James. We live in a lovely big house in the country with a Four Star Gold self catering holiday cottage in the garden

I also offer Bed & Breakfast in our Old Coach House - 3 rooms currently listed - a very spacious Family Ensuite room (sleeps up to 4)

and a King Size Ensuite Double

and another King Size with exclusive use of large family bathroom

The other properties that I "host" are my neighbours and a family friends, I help manage their bookings and "social media" for their properties (two sleep 8, two sleep 6 and other 2).

In my spare time I ride my horse, breed chickens and grow veg !
We have travelled to France, Portugal, Barbados, Trinidad, South Africa..... & most of the South of England with our cricketing son.
Love 80's music - last year at the Eden Project we saw Spandau Ballet, Elton John & Motorhead (!). Really love good food & wine (used to sell fresh fish & wine in Fowey), favourite food is Wild Sea Bass and favourite wine is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

My life motto is to do something fun at least once a day!
Very happy to chat with guests before they book, if further info is required.
