Bright, double room (single bed) in a 1930s, quiet house with parking, close to city centre (25min walk 10min cycle ride or so). TV, Netflix, DVD player, desk, shelving/hanging space. Use of welcoming living room, bathroom/toilet, second toilet, kitchen and garden.
Short, Medium (7+ days = - 33% discount) and Long Stay (28+ days =-40% discount) welcome!

The space
Medium and long stays benefit from reduced rates. :-) If you want to book long term, but find the room is booked for a few days of the time you want, I may be able to move out so you can use my room to tide you over.

Friendly, light, comfortable three bedroom, 1930s semi-detached house North of the river Cam, about a 20 minute walk from King’s College, the market square and lots of restaurants and coffee shops. There are front and back gardens which you are welcome to use, and parking space for your car (off road, but not on a private driveway).

Your room is a double bedroom (size 3.5mx4.5m), with a single bed overlooking the front garden (a double window opens out onto it) with hanging and shelving space for your clothes and belongings, and a metal and glass desk (free high speed (200MB) wifi broadband). A 'smart' TV and DVD player are available for your use (Netflix subscription included), viewable from the bed (headphones provided for if you're a late night viewer!). You're welcome to borrow DVD's and books from my collection. There are a hair dryer and a make-up/shaving mirror in the room, and you will have access to an ironing board and iron, should you need it. Towels and soaps are provided.

You will have use of the bathroom (shower over bath) and toilet (just outside your room + there is a separate one down stairs). You are welcome to use the kitchen. Whatever your length of stay, I will provide a simple breakfast – cereals, jams/honey, etc, coffee and/or tea, hot chocolate, herbal teas or similar - let me know what you like) - so you can prepare your breakfast at a time which suits you. Anything more substantial you would buy yourself. You are also welcome to cook yourself a meal in the evenings.

You will have a kitchen cupboard and single fridge for your sole use. The lounge has a dining room table and chairs by French doors opening onto the garden where you can have your meals. You are welcome to use the lounge at other times, too. I can show you how to use the washing machine if required (there is a tumble dryer, too) – soap, conditioner and such are provided.

You will be sharing the house with one or maybe two other guests (male or female) and myself coming in from the studio to use the kitchen and bathroom. As people often come for work placements or conferences, we respect each other's need for sleep and are quiet between 11pm and 7am. That doesn't mean you have to be in by then, of course ... it's just to ask you to be considerate when you do come in, in case someone has a heavy day coming up. :-)

The house is in a residential area, with grocery shops close by and near bus routes into town if you don’t want to walk. For those who like cycling, bikes can be hired locally. The walk into town is nice, though, taking you across a footbridge over the Cam and either along the river, or across Jesus Green, a well-known local park. It takes around 20-30 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. There is also a local gym (about 5 minute walk away) with a pool, workout machines, classes and even basketball courts!

Cambridge is a wonderful old city (you will know this already, if you’re checking out your stay here), with opportunities for visiting the lovely old colleges (one spectacular way to see them is by chauffeur punt from the river), a range of museums (including the famous Fitzwilliam Museum), a wonderful botanic garden, a great walk to Grantchester to have tea in the orchard or a pint at the famous Green Man Pub, and much, much more.

My house is about 15 minutes by taxi from the station (or 25 minutes by bicycle), from where it is only 25 minutes by train to Stansted and 45 minutes by train to Kings Cross station, central London. Heathrow airport is about 90 minutes by train.

Please ring me if you have any questions, or want to clarify anything. I speak English and Dutch (I’m a Dutch national, but have lived in Britain since ’74). I will do anything I can to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable! And if this room is not available for the dates you want, please check out my other, slightly larger rooms. These are the links:

PS - Without wanting to sound too draconian, but just to have said it somewhere in the blurb ... No smoking and no drugs..! :-)

Check in times:

This is by arrangement. In principle, checking in is ok anything after 7.30am and before 21.30pm, though if you come while I'm at work, we'd need to discuss how to get you in and settled. (There is a key safe.) Provided there is not someone waiting to move into the room, you're welcome to check out anytime before 20.00pm. If necessary I can keep your suitcases in the lounge until you leave in any case. :-)

Medium and Long Term stays:

As there is proportionately less work involved when people stay longer and I love people to be here longer term, the daily rate for medium and long term stays is lower (7+ days = - 33% and 28+ days = - 40%), to make a these stay more affordable.

Guest access
Upstairs: Your room, upstairs landing, shared bathroom.
Downstairs: Shared lounge, kitchen and downstairs toilet.
There is a garden to sit out in.
You are welcome to use the lounge to socialise with the other guest, watch TV or just to have a change of scenery to your room upstairs.

My street is one of houses built in the 1930s. Some are terraced and some (Iike mine) semi-detached. Many are privately owned, but some are council owned, tenanted properties. There are a little row of shops and a community centre at the end of my road, where it joins Akeman Street (currently being refurbished). There is a nice, multi-cultural feel in my street. People are friendly, but tend to keep themselves to themselves.

I am a Dutch national who has lived in the UK since '74. Lived in the States for 1.5 years as a child, and stayed in Berkeley for a year in the late 90's. I've done a fair bit of travelling, mostly on my own. Favourite places: Bali, San Francisco, Barcelona, Paris, Kerala (India). Also been to Mapia in Brazil, but that was pretty challening! :-) I am a social worker with adult clients - currently working to ensure human rights for people who lack the mental capacity to make accommodation decisions for themselves. I'm a quiet kind of person. While at home (and especially if I'm working the next day) I go to bed between 10 and 11pm. While on holiday it's likely to be the same, or maybe a little later, and I'm likely to get up fairly early (say 7.30-8am) to get a lot of exploration time in. In addition to walking round and visiting places, I love reading books in coffee shops. I probably won't do a lot of cooking while I'm staying somewhere. I don't really do at home, and it's more interesting to eat out when I'm somewhere new. Thai is a favourite. I discovered this site (heard about it on the radio) almost a year ago, and I have loved having so many people to stay, often for quite extended periods. Interesting to hear their stories and share a bit of their adventure of coming to Cambridge. I have also stayed with one person as a guest, which has been terrific! :-)

During your stay
It varies, depending on what my guests want and also on whether I've been working all day and just need to chill out in my own room. But always up for a friendly 'How's your day been?' or 'How are you getting on?', and certainly happy to help out with things if there is a problem. Usually bump into people in the kitchen in the evening, though I might not be in there long (I'm not a great cook!). I'm around a bit more on the w/e, though often go into town. I guess if you want someone to have dinner with in the evenings or be part of a family, this is perhaps not the place to come. I've had some good discussions with people, though, on a range of interesting topics!
