Sometimes bookings just go terribly wrong. Unfortunately, this time we were at the receiving end. Despite having booked a normal family room for two adults and two children, for which we received both an automatic confirmation and reminder through Airbnb, Hotel Svea could not find the reservation in their system upon check-in. The friendly reception staff quickly assured us that they would nevertheless find some accommodation for us. However, the only available room was the so called 'summer room', which indeed easily accommodates four people, but still is nothing but a conference room in the basement without direct access to bath and shower in the room. The hotel did offer a discount for the room, which we happily accepted (even with the notion that it isn't a discount if you're actually downgraded to accept a room with a much lower standard). The conference room is spacious but very 'sterile' and all furniture arrangement quite ad hoc with extension cables scattered around the room. The room had a strong smell of chlorine but still had stains on floor and table, which gave the overall impression that the room had been prepared in a haste to cover an increasing demand during a busy summer season. The bath was in the corridor and despite promises that no one else would use it besides us, the floor was wet, dirty and had used paper towels in the bin when we arrived. The shower further down the corridor was occupied for a long time in the early morning, which interrupted our routines and plans for the day. The worst part was still the noise from the tivoli just across the street and the adjacent concert that lasted until midnight. Even though the hotel is not accountable for external events and loud music from its neighborhood, we wish we could have been informed about the evening events literally just outside the hotel, which was particularly noticeable on the basement level. Had we known about the fair and the concert and the poorly insulated bedroom, we might not have accepted the to stay over night. The shiny green Exit light above a squeaky entrance to the room didn't exactly improve the situation. The breakfast was quite average with a basic buffet and limited space created queues in the morning rush. In all fairness the breakfast area was clean and still had a rather nice atmosphere - and the coffee was good, which goes a long way but doesn't make up for the rest. So all in all a very disappointing stay and my general recommendation would be that the hotel refrain from using Airbnb as an advertising and booking space unless they use the best feature of this platform in a proper manner, which is the personal communication and prompt follow-up on orders. For our stay, as this subjective (they all are, aren't they) review suggests, it was much too much hassle and too many annoyances, and indeed very little value for money.
