Upscale North Berkeley locale, walking distance to UC Berkeley, art galleries, restaurants and cafes, public transportation to SF, parks, the Bay. Culture, music, theater, recreation. This suite has it's own bathroom and entrance for your privacy.

The space

Our space is cozy and quiet. The lower-level bedroom is well-insulated so it stays warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Double-pane windows let in lots of fresh air. The bedroom is stocked with games, cards and books, as well as lots of outlets for your devices. There's a wifi booster in the room. All the bedding, the bed and mattress themselves are new and always freshly laundered when you arrive. You have your own private bathroom with roomy shower. The entry room (my re-furnished art studio) is equipped with a new fridge and microwave, plates, utensils, glassware, coffee, tea, half and half and guest treats. Please note: ceiling height in bedroom is 6'6", in bathroom is 6'9" and entry room is 8'. The space is street level in the entry room, and partially underground in the bath and bedroom. You are welcome to use the side patio for hanging out outside and enjoying our temperate climate. Motion detector and solar lights will help you find your way to the Airbnb entrance at night. If your stay is five nights or longer, you may use our washing machine and dryer but please check with us first so we can show you how to use them.

Guest access

Your private Airbnb entrance is located on the right side of our house, past the redwood car port. Follow the pebble/flagstone path to the orange door. The key works the top lock - turn key to the left to unlock the door. You don't need to go through our main house to get to your suite and you are welcome to enjoy our backyard when the weather is good. Please arrange with us ahead if you'd like to park in our driveway, which is always available. We have lots of street parking around our house, but are happy to give you our space if you need it for easier loading and unloading.

Interaction with guests

We want you to have all the privacy you'd like on your trip - we will greet you when you arrive and show you where everything is, but after that we won't "bug" you with our presence unless you would like to get to know us. We are always a text or phone call away and will respond immediately to any need/question you might have. We also love sharing our favorite spots to visit, places to eat, advice about how to get around Berkeley and the Bay Area. We both lived in San Francisco for many years so we can also help you plan excursions into the City.

Other things to note

Because we live in a quiet neighborhood (we've been here almost 27 years!), we request that you are mindful of our neighbors and do not play loud music or hang out outside at night. No smoking, please.

I really enjoyed staying at Susan's place. She's a thoughtful and kind person and a very welcoming host. The apartment has everything you could possibly need for a short stay in Berkeley, it's nicely decorated and situated in a lovely, quiet neighbourhood. I was visiting for a conference at UCB and enjoyed the pleasant walks to campus. It's easy to get to San Fransisco and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby. Would recommend and hope to stay again in future.

A lovely place to explore Berkeley. Great neighbourhood, nice to wander around and get some good views further up the hills as well as being close to gourmet ghetto area- 10 or 15 mins walk and downtown area easily walkable. A very cosy place with good facilities for making tea, coffee etc. and useful information provided. Susan was very thoughtful, welcoming and good at communicating, ensuring that we were clear on how to get in and that we had everything we needed. Highly recommended.

Susan’s place was as advertised. She has done a remarkable job making it really welcoming to guests. There is plenty of parking on the street and it is a very quiet residential safe neighborhood. It is easily accessible to public transportation as well and downtown Berkeley. It is an in-law unit and Susan lives in the main house but she does not interfere with your stay at all. She was also kind enough to check in with me during my stay to make sure that everything was going great! I would highly recommend her place for anyone looking to enjoy Berkeley!

Susan User Profile

We are both Northern California natives and have lived in Berkeley for 27 years. We have two kids in college. We love Northern California - the beauty of the ocean, Bay, forests and parks, the climate, the culture, the ethnic diversity. Susan loves to hike, garden (especially tomatoes), read, cook and learn new things. She enjoys meeting new people and speaks fluent Italian, having lived in Rome for five years when she was in her 20's. She and Fred love international cuisine, red wine and sitting out on their deck relaxing. Fred is a business owner and musician who enjoys getting together with family and friends, going to theater and concert performances and rooting for the Giants!

We really enjoy inviting others to stay at our house - guests have come from all over the country and world - as far away as Asia, Europe, Latin America, and as close as Sacramento and all locales up and down California. We learn a lot from our guests and aspire to treat everyone with respect and kindness. It's a treat to have you here and we want you to have the best possible experience in our neighborhood and home. We are true stewards of the idea of offering radical hospitality to others!

We have stayed at Airbnb's in Oregon and New York City - it's such an easy, affordable way to travel - oh, and travel is something that we are both passionate about. As hosts we will be happy to meet you and assist you so that you have the best possible stay in Berkeley and the Bay Area. We know San Francisco, the East Bay and Marin county really well and have lots of recommendations of places to visit, especially if this is your first trip to our area. Our safe, self-contained unit is attached to our house on a separate floor, with a separate entrance so you'll have lots of privacy and quiet and can come and go as you like. Berkeley is a true food mecca and there are many great restaurants, bistros and cafes within walking distance. Our house is situated close to UC Berkeley in a quiet, tree-lined residential neighborhood. We are also walking distance to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), a metro line that will take you into downtown San Francisco, shops the Ferry Building, museums, beautiful San Francisco Bay, AT&T Park and more.
